The Environmental Studies Program at Dartmouth is the oldest program of its kind in the United States. The program was started in 1970 to promote the understanding of environmental cause and effects on the planet and naturally, on the population. In 1996, on Earthday as a matter of fact, the college released the information regarding obtaining a major in Environmental Studies.

Minor programs in Environmental Studies or Environmental Science are also available. The program works closely with the Dartmouth Organic Farm, has its own library, offers a foreign study program in Southern Africa, as well as other internships and scholarships with other affiliated associations and companies for independent studies. Dartmouth also offers advanced training toward a doctorate degree in their Earth, Ecosystem and Ecological Sciences Program (EEES) through their Department of Biological Sciences or the Department of Earth Sciences.
