Are we wise to threaten Iran with sanctions against their oil exports which will surely lead into more conflict in that?

Iran in return warns that its navy will block oil shipments in the Straits of Hormuz. Aren't we headed into yet another military conflict of questionable need? What's your take?

No, it's a ploy to make certain the oil companies can continue to gouge us. It's stupid for the US, at any time, but especially in our financially weakened state, to try and throw our weight around, especially in the middle east. They have something we need because Americans are too stupid and lazy to stop wasting oil, and the oil producing countries could bring our country crashing down - all they have to do is stop the flow of oil and the US is an instant third world country.

And it's a lot easier and cost effective to stop the flow than it would be for the US to keep it going. The government of the US needs to start understanding they don't matter as much as they used to, and start evolving their policies to reflect that change in the world. We need to back off and stop thinking we are negotiating from a position of power.

The US needs to stop paying the bully before the little kids gang up and knock a little sense into us.

I agree with your last paragraph. The tides are turning and what once was total Western dominance is no longer. Dougiedoggone 12 days ago .

Paying the bully needs to be playing the bully.

A huge, overbloated, wartime military, all dressed up with nowhere to go.. Out of Iraq, facing huge layoffs.. We're too far from Poland, so we'll invade-------------?...

I'm feeling rather cynical about this military Empire of ours too. Dougiedoggone 12 days ago .

Yup, with everything electronic in our country now, we're the biggest users. Iran is also trying to build an atomic bomb; won't that be fun. Israel is watching like the cat watching the mouse.

What I find interesting is that we are selling arms and fighter jets to the Arab Emirates (namely, the Saudis). What we need is for the Arab world to sit on them.It could happen.

I just said as much to fenjo. Glad someone else sees it that way. Dougiedoggone 10 days ago .

The aftermath of WWII made it possible for US to become economically the biggest kid on the block. I imagine that some believe that WWIII will do the same. Maybe it is a good thing that virtually every country on the planet is all but broke.

Even China's economic growth bubble is on the verge of collapse. Without the means for any country to engage in an extended military conflict, WWIII may be averted. Iran's threat to cut off some 20% of the crude oil that we and European nations need may encourage the Western world to do what we did militarily in Iraq.

Would the Middle East join us in our effort, or would they aid in the defense of Iran? And if everyone were to successfully gang up on Iran, would it end up in the same state of political and social disarray we left Iraq in? .

Iran has deeper ties than Iraq with other powerful countries. The Persians are an older race and ever mindful of their ancestors' world status in ancient history. I would not underestimate their long term strategic plans but neither would I seek to engage them in the current diplomatic but increasingly noisy chess match.

Silence and a big stick will triump noisy bullies. Why play into their game? Dougiedoggone 11 days ago .

I say with all due respect-screw them... dougiedoggone 11 days ago .

Heres the deal. Iran doesn't have realistic means of blocking Strait. Some of the CNN responses you have received are furthest from the truth.

Since 1979 Iran's national motto is "Death to America". Their regime has grown more and more radical, and hellbent on our and Israel's destruction. It's not about minding our own business.

Doing that won't matter to a nation 1 year removed from a 20megaton nuclear warhead. What most people don't understand is that they WILL use it. Dying does'nt scare them one bit, that's actually what they want.

I know firsthand, I have Iranian family members that will tell you the same thing. We don't have to start a war with them, they'll start it first. Oh yeah, it has nothing to do with the oil.

We've been trying futiliy(Obama) to make nice. Look where that got us. Actually, we've (Obama) been too nice(here, have a sophisticated drone) They see this as a nation that fears them, and that fuels thier aggressive nature.

This has therefore nothing to do with being a bully. It's more like self-preservation. So, sit back and mind your own business and see what happens.

Good luck with that.

It's always a problem with wannabe's. I personally feel that Israel needs to mend fences and get with it neighbors who are Arabs not puffed up Persian fascists. My two cents: "Walk softly and carry a big stick"..TR.

You got that right, my friend. First stop, cough up some some of that sacred land and stop being so piuos. I gotta funny feeling they don't really like us either.

Israeli's. They need to reinstate "Palestine", and both sides need to learn how to coexist. Here's a little nugget for you, the Iranian "citizens" are really nice peaceloving people that like Americans. It's thier stinking, fasciest Govt.

That oppresses thier natural/normal Islamic beliefs. My Bro-in-law was once picked up on the side of the street, thrown into a truck, and "in the Army now" style. Then thrown into prison for not conforming to political beliefs.

Fed once every 4 or 5 days, shackled to a wall, with arms in the air. He had to learn to eat with his feet. He had to have friends of friends to get released.

Those anti-American rallies are staged, and you better show up if you know what I mean. The many I pesonally know, here in America still have a hidden fear of speaking out against regime. In the end, someone has to "do" something about them. Just who, I cant answer that.

I understand who the bad guys are in Iran. They ousted our ally and dictator and things have gotten even more repressive. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...The gov't there will kill you after they finish torturing you for having pro-western leanings.

I say let their neighbors deal with them, we have our own problems. Dougiedoggone 10 days ago .

Yes, we are wise to move ahead with sanctions. We can't let criminal nations get away with bullying. Yes, another conflict is on it's way and Israel may make the first move but Iran has been asking for this for a long time.

What kind of a bully will they become when they get the bomb? The time to act is now! And war is good for the economy!

Yeah, we just spent trillions and have little to show-explain yourself please. Dougiedoggone 11 days ago .

We ignored Nazi Germany and look where it got us! And we didn't get out of the depression until we went to war. Not dealing with Iran would be like not dealing with criminals.

They then end up controlling you.

Sometimes it is better to do what is right and not be concerned with something "to show. " .

What is right to me should not be a worldwide responsibilty for the United States military. The Saudis, Egyptians, and Israelis are armed to the teeth. Let them handle it, I say.

We need to invade our own country and tend to our own mess for awhile, I'm thinking. Dismantle the war machine and downsize Halliburton, Honeywell, Boeing, Northrup-Grumman etc. And find a new export other than guns and money and death. Dougiedoggone 11 days ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
