Can dahlia roots be planted before danger of frost is past if I cover them at night?

I believe the biggest concern with dahlias is that the fresh growth might be damaged by the frost. As far as planting them, my parents never dig theirs up; and they winter over well enough.

Thanks so much. I'll be careful this year as the new growth is already coming out but I like what you said about leaving them in all year. I think I'll try that in the fall and just cover them.

They might not make it through the winter without good mulch that far north - I don't know how far down your frost line goes in the winter.

Thanks. I'll be sure to cover them very well then :) Our frost line probably goes down quite a ways as we can get to - 40 some winters. I have the dahlias is a corner where the house/porch join so there's protection on 2 sides and if I go the extra mile with the covering they should be OK.

I guess it's pointless asking whether that is celsius or farehheit ;Dour frostline has been known to go down as far as an inch in a severe winter - which is 10 degrees below freezing. In a mild winter, I've had roses still blooming in february.

Our temps are in Celsius but its interesting that at -40 Celsius and Fahrenheit are the same. Roses in February. Wow.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
