Can my 2002 VW GTI 1.8T really use the same timing belt/tensioner until it reaches 105,000 miles?

Most cars must have their timing belts changed around 60,000 or 80,000 miles, but the service schedule for my 2002 VW GTI 1.8T says this servicing should be done every 105,000 miles. Since my car has an "interference engine" - the valves and pistons call collide if the valve timing is sufficiently far off - having the belt or its tensioner break could be a very expensive proposition. Wouldn't it be prudent to replace the belt sooner, or am I just being overly cautious and throwing money away?

Not a problem German cars are engineered much differently than the typical Japanese cars. Japanese cars most commonly recommend replacement around the mileage you're talking about. I have two friends that own VWs,I even called on of them.

The one that I spoke to said that she has 141,000 on her car with no maintenance to the timing belt. It's pretty likely that you can follow any of the suggestions in the manual. The Germans don't play games with their reputations or their engineering.

If it were virtually any other model of small engine car,I'd recommend replacement much earlier, but all the German cars that I've worked on (much fewer than American cars) seem to be pretty true to form. Sidebar:There are probably many suggestions as far as coolant, spark plugs and oil weight in that manual. Follow everything to the T.

German vehicles and engines border on over-engineered,making them somewhat fussy if not treated right. Sources: Many references, all life experiences. Get trusted mechanic to check the tensioner and belt condition. This advice concerning the Audi 1.8T, which is the same engine. "audi recommendation is around 85K miles which most engine don't see unless the timing belt had been previously changed.

Its not the belt that fails it is the tensioner giving in resulting in a major engine rebuild. " Sources: forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2366097.phtml .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
