Can you please recommend a book or books for a nine year old boy interested in soldiers/war. Preferably honest... Basically looking for a cross section of a soldier's life, choices and compromises made, reasons they chose that career and life, etc. Not overly glorifying/preachy. Smart kid, but please keep reading level (5th/6th grade) in mind.
Memoirs of military figures ok if age/level appropriate (rather not dwell on their sex lives) (Staff at bookstores treat me like I'm crazy, suggest massive adult books, or obviously anti-war picks that aren't what I've asked for. ) Want to keep a student reading what interests him. Parents are on board.
Please spare me responses that it's irresponsible. Thanks. Asked by eilonwy 48 months ago Similar questions: recommend book books year boy interested soldiers war Preferably honest Arts > Books.

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien This book is so well written and the stories are so gripping emotionally and such a nice and candid look inside the Vietnam Conflict and what weight those soldiers had to carry - physically and mentally - I could not put it down and actually read it in a single day. I haven't read O'Brien's other works, but this collection of stories exceeded my expectations. I am a veteran myself and I know dealing with things seen and done is often difficult for anyone who has experienced war or life in the military.
Two thumbs way up for this triumphant effort. This is about right for 6th grade. Sources: My experience.

Johnny Tremain Johhny Tremain is an American Revolutionary War story. Books about George Washington, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Zachery Taylor, Abraham Lincoln, US Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F Kennedy (PT 109). These men all had significant experience, both as soldiers & Commanders-in-Chief.
John Paul Jones, Alvin York, Audie Murphy, both went to war when called, one began his military service as a conscientious objector. I forget which one. George Washington spent a great deal of time in uniform, yet all he really wanted to do was run his plantation.
Some books on early Republican Rome. These men fought, but as soon as possible they returned to their farms, there real joy in life. There is one in particular, but his name escapes me right now.
But I could find it. You may have to look into older titles if available. The ones written before the men’s sex life and their faults dominate the current reading material.
Good ones will mention their faults & mistakes, but not dominate the reading. For more ideas try: How to Raise an American, by Myrna Blyth & Chriss Winston 649 .510973 B661. Good Luck and Thank You for trying to teach a student to be proud of his country..
Here are two authors that I can recommend highly... both of whom have books with a military setting that would be of interest to a boy that age--at least, they were of interest to MY son--these are books we both have read over and over. Caveat: These are both science fiction authors! BOth are set in a recognizable, not-too-far-off future, however, Orson Scott Card--the Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow books. At his age and with your stated interests, I wouldn't recommend the rest of the straight "Ender's Game books for him--they're terrific, but simply no longer military, the character of interest is now an adult, and they are thematically different.
The Ender's Shadow books, however...spot on. ) Ender's Game. Ender's Shadow.
Shadow Puppets. Shadow of the Hegemon. Shadow of the Giant.
A War of Gifts. First Contact. Ender (nickname--his actual name is Andrew) Wiggin is essentially drafted when he's about 6, as a possible future commander for a fleet that will be sent to fight an alien enemy.
This is less "classic military" --but the characters are his age, and these books are a terrific read. Ender's Shadow actually tells the same story from the point of view of one of the other kids (You can read them separately, together, back to back, years apart--both books stand firmly alone), and the rest of the series are much more "Classic military"--earth-based stories, about a waar on Earth.Separate...but equal RObert A Heinlein: Starship Troupers (and several of his juvemal novels). Starship Troupers takes a kid through basic training, and into war.
The book is a juvenile, and won top honors in its year of publication (the Hugo Award), and has been in print, in multiple languages, ever since (1962, I believe). The point is that there IS no extreous adult-interest nonsense in the book, and Heinlein was a military man, though and through--the military depiction, the science and the engineering are exact, and he KNEW how to tell a story and how to keep a reader's interest. DO NOT--I repeat, DO NOT!
Mistake this as having ANYTHING whatsoever to do with the abomination of a movie that bears the same name! There is simply NO comparison, and both RObert and Virginia Heinlein would be spinning in their graves at it! I'll add widgets for some of the other Heinlein juviniles that are military-related.
They're ALL good, though. Sources: My bookshelves, and what MY son enjoys... Great books As a kid I read the Redwall books with my mom. I remember that I enjoyed them so much that I took them to show to my fifth grade teacher. She ended up reading the first two to the class.
These books feature epic battles between mice, badgers, rats, and many more "fierce" woodland animals. Perfect for a grade school boy! I actually have a friend finishing his senior year in college who is reading them all over again.
I hope he enjoys them as much as I did. :) Mothax's Recommendations Redwall (Redwall, Book 1) Amazon List Price: $7.99 Used from: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 754 reviews) Mossflower (Redwall, Book 2) Amazon List Price: $7.99 Used from: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 298 reviews) Mattimeo: A Tale From Redwall Amazon List Price: $7.99 Used from: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 213 reviews) Martin the Warrior (Redwall, Book 6) Amazon List Price: $7.99 Used from: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 261 reviews) Mariel of Redwall (Redwall, Book 4) Amazon List Price: $7.99 Used from: $1.48 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 129 reviews) Salamandastron (Redwall, Book 5) Amazon List Price: $8.99 Used from: $4.00 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 136 reviews) .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
