Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords assassinated in Arizona?

The Huffington Post has a growing list of live updates here: huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/08/gabrielle-... Apparently, Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic representative for the 8th Congressional district in Arizona since January 3, 2007, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" public event at a Safeway grocery store in northwest Tucson, Arizona, earlier today--Saturday, January 8, 2011--when a gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon, shooting her in the head and shooting at least 11 others, 6 of whom are reported to have died. The gunman was said to have run up to Giffords as she was speaking to a couple and shot her from about four feet away. The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander, then taken into custody.

The incident is still, however, being treated as an active crime scene. A witness describes the lone shooter as a young man, "mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing. " He said nothing during the shooting or while being held down.

He didn't look like a businessman, but more of a "fringe character," the source said. While initial reports stated that Giffords had died of the gunshot, as of 2:40pm Eastern time, CNN, Reuters & NPR no longer report that Giffords is dead. She is still alive and in surgery, but the extent of her injuries and her condition isn't being released. At this time, there's no mention of a motive in this shooting that I can find.

In an interview with CNN, an FBI spokesperson said the motive in unclear. Giffords is a supporter of increasing the number of border patrol agents, tough employer sanctions for businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, and a guest-worker program. In her first month in office, she voted to support increased federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research, raising the minimum wage, endorsing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, and supporting new rules for the House of Representatives targeting ethical issues. Giffords also voted to repeal subsidies to big oil companies and invest the savings in renewable energy.

According to AuburnPub.Com, "Giffords, 40, was re-elected to her third term last November. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington. She first won election to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in URL5 November, she edged a tea party favorite.

" Giffords is married to astronaut Mark Kelly, who's a veteran of Desert Storm. They have two children. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
