Do you know what a Calculus (tartar) is?

Tartar (aka calculus) is bacterial plaque (an invisible sticky layer of bacteria that adhere to teeth) that has calcified. Whereas plaque can be brushed away with a toothbrush, tartar cannot, and needs to be removed by a professional dental cleaning (called a scaling) by a dentist or dental hygienist using ultrasonic or manual dental instruments called scalers.

It's a plaque made of mineral deposits that has harden on someone's teeth.
