Does buying cheaper ink for my inkjet printer really damage it or reduce its life span?

I have a Canon i860 and, sometimes, the cartridges can be very expensive, especially if I am going through them fast. I see places all over the web where they sell cheaper ink, generic ink, etc.Are there any downsides to using these products? It hasn't ruined mine I've had the same printer for around 3 years and I've always used generic ink and I haven't had a single problem yet. The quality is good and the printer still works. Sources: My knowledge .

Ive tried those sites ive tried those cheap ink sites they suck the quality I got in one of my printers was pretty bad even after I cleaned out the print head and did all that stuff it still barley helped. Its just better to buy a printer that sells the cheapest ink like lexmark. Sources: my opinion .
