My fresh water aquarium seems to grow algae faster in the summer than in the winter. My husband says algae grows faster in cold water. Who's right?

Hot If my backyard pond is any example, much more algae grows during the summer--much more.

Well the higher the temp, the more nitrates will occur. Algae feeds on nitrates as ell as photosynthesis. So if your tank gets warm from heat, light, or both, you will have quicker algae growth. The way to keep it down is to add or increase your carbon filtration if you are not going to have a chiller.

Do an experiment. Test your ammonia/nitrate levels in both temp variants and see which is higher. Bettcha it's in the summer Sources: 8 year tank owner .

Warm I dunno about aquariums but my experience after living on a fresh water lake for 34 years is that algae blooms (when they bloom depends on the variety) only happen between late Spring and late Summer when the weather and the water is comparatively warm. I've never seen any algae bloom in cold water.

Sunny weather. If there is snow blocking the sunlight on a pond, it can't do photosynthesis as much and it can't.. grow as much. Heat may speed up chemical reactions, but I think either weather it will grow..

Living in Florida- that's an easy one! We have cold weather one month of the year and cool weather for about three or four. Int he middle of summer, I'll pass by a canal near our house that is covered in gross green algae- you can't even see the water.

This is fresh water. If I went there right now- I would see little if any algae. It just doesn't grow as well in the cooler weather.

I think you're right.

Cold water is coming out of the hot water faucets.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
