I don't know what grade level your son is.... I suggest going to a library and speaking to one of the librarians there... there is probably at least ONE librarian who likes history and historical fiction and knows of a book in your son's grade level he might enjoy. You'll want to keep two things in mind when speaking to the librarian: What historical period is he interested in? What is a comfortable reading level and book length for the project so that its an enjoyable experience, and not tedious or stressed?
I didn't start reading historical fiction until my late teens,... and honestly, I have a VERY short attention span for it because I lose interest if there are too many or too glaring of historical inaccuracies (since I read historical fiction about time periods I research deeply) so,.. if you son is... say,... 14 or older.. he might enjoy "The Archers Tale" by Bernard Cornwell if he likes the late medieval European history about the time of the 100 Years War... it was a good story, comfortable easy writing, socially and historically fairly accurate with lots of exciting battle scenes... Again, I would encourage you to visit your local library... librarians are highly under utilized.
Ther are some good ones.... "Sowers of The Thunder" Robert E. Howard A book of stories about personal experiences during The Crusades, the attacks of Mongols on Europe and other action filled stories, very well written. "Flashman in The Great Game" George MacDonald Frasier.
The exploits of a 19th century British soldier mistakenly branded a hero. Lots of excellent footnotes about real characters and events. The Walking Drum Louis L’amour Excellent account a boy who travels across Asia and Europe during the Middle Ages.
Little Big Man Thomas Berger Story of the old West, Custers Last Stand, and many adventures, told from an Indian and White perspective (by the same protagonist)! These are great books for a good middle school and up reader, and for adults as well. Sources: My bibliophilia Duplicitous's Recommendations The sowers of the thunder: With illus.
