Well, you can still do that, but you need something to do the ringing. If each cable is a home run to a common point, or you have enough pairs, the quickest is to spring about $250 or less on eBay for a Panasonic KX-T PBX. A TA-824 would give you 8 extensions, or, since it's intercom only and you don't need features, you could grab a TA-anything, or a 30810 or a 61610.

There are some common path intercoms that would do the trick, but you need a power supply and buzzers and extra pairs to ring the buzzers, so by the time you fooled around with that, the Panasonic route would be the best. You might also grab a Partner ACS 1.0 system. 3 lines 8 extrensions in a box.

Well, if you want to have a neat phone system on your home you may want to ask your phone company if they offer a home phone system. Such phone systems are cheap nowadays.
