Dpreview. Com This site I have found to have great reviews of the various cameras out there for you, not just the DSLRs. I have owned both advanced consumer point and shoots with a 10x zoom as well as a Nikon D40 (DSLR) and I have found I love what the DSLR offers me with taking control of my exposures.

And this to me is what is important in a camera, but most people just want to capture a moment forever without having to think about it beyond pressing the shutter release button. If that is you consider any number of the advanced point and shoots on the market they are a great bargain. However if you are still thinking DSLR to point and shoot consider the following. To get a quality lens offering "0 to 10x" (18-200mm) with image stabilization (a standard feature on most long zoom consumer models these days) on my DSLR, it is going to cost me.

I would have to spend $700 for the lens plus the $600 I already had sunk into the camera. There are lenses that cover the 18-200mm focal range that can be had for as little as $250, but they lack the stabilization feature as well as an on-board autofocus motor that the D40 requires the lens to have if you want an autofocus option. But even at the lower end lens, your at $850 minimum when you can pick up a great point and shoot with a long lens that can give the casual shooter great results at about half the cost.

These are two good choices The 8 MP Canon S5 IS is a 12X superzoom that is an excellent alternative to a DSLR. It's great! I love mine.

And it is image stabilized. Here is a good review steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/canon_s... The Canon Rebel Xt is their entry level DSLR. Also 8 MP.

You can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon. There are really two big players in the DSLR game - Nikon and Canon. You can’t really go wrong with either of them.

The Nikon D80 is a gem, I slightly prefer it over the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. Not sure what you mean by a "10 zoom". With an SLR your zoom comes from the lens if you get a zoom lens.

Both the cameras I have linked below have zoom lenses included. You can then buy bigger zoom lenses if you are so inclined. I have used a Nikon D70s for almost a year now and loved every minute of it.It takes beautiful pictures even on the most automatic setting, but allows you to tweak and play to with settings to your heart's content as you learn more photographic techniques.

Few For "SLR like" or superzooms look at the Canon Powershot S3 is or S5 IS. For real DSLRs look at the Nikon D40 or D40X or the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Go to the links for the real prices. Nikons are being heavily discounted these days and there is a $100.00 rebate available when you buy an additional lens with an SLR. Shop around..

New to the Digital SLR camera world and would like some advice.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
