I have a ceiling light fixture that says 60 watt light bulb max. Can I use a 100 watt bulb? What are the dangers?

Stick with the 60. If you need more light, you can consider a compact fluorescent with a higher lumen output. The reason the light fixture says "60 Watt max" is because the light fixture has been designed and tested to operate safely with no more heat than is produced by a 60 watt bulb.

If you put a higher wattage bulb in the fixture, you can experience any or all of the following problems: premature bulb failure insulation failure on the wiring discoloration/heat damage to the fixture components. Failure of the fixture wires and of course, risk of fire. While It is pretty rare for a fixture to directly start a fire, an indirect fire from insulation failure is one of the most common causes of fire.

The best option, if you need more light, is to replace the fixture with a multiple lamp fixture. Sources: I'm an electrician AND a fireman.

Well, the "danger" is also the worst thing that could happen. A 60 watt bulb draws less electricity than a 100 watt bulb and puts out heat. While the electrical wiring that feeds the fixture may be sufficient to handle the load, the internal wiring may not, or the heat generated may melt things. In either of these cases, an electrical short could happen that would lead to a structure fire, and possible injury or death .

It gets more complicated if the fixture has more sockets. A ceiling fan generally has 4 or 5 sockets, so the difference between the electrical draw and heat generated would be 240 vs 400 watts for 4 sockets and 300 vs 500 for a 5 socket fixture. It's always best to head the manufacturer's recommendations and restrictions. If you need more light, change the incandescent lights for mini-flourescent lights.

But, you can't use those in a fixture that is supplied by a dimmer switch - they burn out to quickly and get expensive to replace. ! Do you think they would put a sticker on it saying "60 W max" for no reason? If you want more light from that fixture, you could get a 60W clear bulb-- those put out substantially more light than the frosted kind.

Or you could put a CCFL bulb in. Those give about five times more light per watt than the old incandescent bulbs. BUt note that many of the cheaper CCFL bulbs don't last long in confined fixtures..

I disagree. The reason these fixtures say 60 watt is to avoid lawsuits. 100 watt bulbs will work fine.

With that said, its best to use CFLs unless you need to dim the fixture. If you need to dim, you can use incandescent or the new, less-wattage LED replacments.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
