The heat and probably too many on the vine. Thin them out and bring a load inside to ripen in a dark area of the kitchen. These will turn red within a couple of days and the plants will be asked to do less work on the smaller ones left on the vines.
Water a lot if you're experiencing this heat wave. Water in the early morning, or if that's difficult, then in the evening. Keep the roots cool and damp.
I spray the foliage with cool water again later in the day. My plants have produced a lot of tomatoes but I've been ripening most inside when they've reached a decent size. I did my mid-summer fertilizing and added more fast acting lime to boost the calcium and prevent some early signs of "blossom end rot" that appeared despite the fact I loaded the soil with lime in spring.
It's a rough year for vegetables. I sprayed with a bone meal tea as well. Tomatoes like sun but not this intense heat.
They normally don't even produce flowers when it's in the 90's! You treat pepper plants the same way. My bell peppers aren't even producing at all but I have had luck with what was called "Giant Marconi sweet green peppers" although they look more like Anaheim sweet chilli peppers than Italian peppers to me.
You can't trust labeled seedlings. They're too spicey to be Italian sweet peppers but they boil down nicely and make a good sauce. A plant that seems to survive and prosper in this type of weather is Sweet yellow banana peppers.
I grow these in large pots which requires even more watering but they produce like mad. Due to the heat and lack of rain, and in spite of my watering and proper fertilization, I lost ALL my zucchini squash plants, all my crook neck squash, a ton of cucumber plants (both bush and traditional) and what few beans that survived an insane attack of bunnies, haven't produced any beans at all - not bush beans or pole beans. All my wintered over onions and leeks are gone.
I have nothing to show for two seasons of work. I have two isolated plants that are producing some eggplant fruit. Only my potted basil is doing well.
I woke up today to find my tomato leaves are browning despite my efforts and despite the fact they are heavy with fruit. I'm not sure they'll live long enough to bring he current tomatoes to fruition. They may have to be picked and kitchen ripened before they reach a good size.
I think this is going to be a short season. You may want to chat on Dave's Garden Forum. They are a wonderful group:http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/Best of luck!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
