Well, I don't actually know why. What I do know is that we had so many diff kinds of tomato this year that we had some shaped like your picture, and we even had some orange ones shaped like your picture.
. . .. And all the traditional shapes as well.
What is important is that you never, under any circumstances purchase or consume Genetic mutant tomatoes like those from the seeds of a toxic monsanto tomato.
Tomatoes are usually very hearty Plants. The strange shape could come from a couple of reasons. Soil Nitrates, over watering or PH level of the soil.
The Beefsteak variety is not much different than any other species with the exception of size and flavour variations. Have your soil tested; then you can adjust your fertilizer accordingly. You might also try pouring a cup of Nutri-soil around each plant three times a week.
Happy harvesting!
Probably has something to do with regularity of temps, watering, etc. Oh well, they probably taste good. Enjoy!
Not all of the tomatoes are shaped like this one. This is the first tomato to be picked. It looks like the tomatoes that are just starting to grow are round.
They are a beefsteak variety, not heirloom, which I would expect to be oddly shaped. At least the picture, when we bought the plant, showed perfectly round tomatoes. I think possiblities could be too much water - we had a lot of late spring rain in california or over-fertilization -I fertilized a few weeks ago.
I am interested to know about the 'why' also. The first year I grew tomatoes in a new climate zone, I just murdered them all. ACK!
Now into my second year and they are all doing well, except for my Siberian Purple that just will not make a tomato.
It appears to be the brand of tomato you planted. I used to grow types that got really large, but grew in strange shapes like the one here. The name of that one was "Beefsteak," but this could be a different name.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
