This recently happened to me. Actually I had to sit BETWEEN two obese people on a recent flight. My first thought : I'm so thankful and happy I am not obese. My second thought: I'm so lucky that I don't take up much space.
I made it through my flight. A bit uncomfortable but HEY! That should be the worse thing to happen to me in my life!
I did not make an issue out of the situation. I didn't know these people and I didn't know their personal circumstances in life. Their obesity could very well be caused by a physical or emotional disorder or a combination of both.
That certainly is enough of an issue to deal with.
I have been in this situation and it was not comfortable. There were no empty seats. I accepted the fact that this is the hazards of public transportation.
I was polite and carried on conversation as normal. The way I saw it, we were both uncomfortable, no need to make an issue out of the situation.
It would be a tough fit as I am one of those extremely obese people myself.
I would try to move seats if I could if I were uncomfortable sitting next to them but if not I'd leave it alone or suck it up.
I too have been in this situation, but never asked to be moved. I feel you need to show human compassion for the person next to you, they have feelings too. I know some airlines have larger seats for larger people, this seems like a good idea.
There is no reason to rant on about the situation, you just have to sit down and hopefully have a great conversation with this person, you never know this conversation might go down in history!
I am a former flight attendant and this happens. Ask the flight attendant if there is another seat, if not, she might ask a deadheading crew member to take the seat. That is up to the individual though.
Sometimes when people see the trouble they may volunteer to switch. If not of the above work out for you, you will have to suffer through. At times, people have started fights over this and in that case there is almost always someone willing to switch to keep the peace on the plane.
I would write a letter to the airlilnes as well when you are done because I advocate people of a certain size buying two seats. Maybe if enough people complain something will change, some already do it.
The odds of stuff happening like this with the engine are extremely rare, and airplane safety seems to be at its highest nowadays. Flying is in fact far safer than How to Drive a Stick Shift|driving...So, I'm not afraid at all to fly. If you think about it, when you fly you have up, down, left and right to avoid other flying objects, so flying is very safe.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.
I will say that I'm slightly nervous about safety standards deteriorating a little bit as airlines have less money to pay employees and they perhaps employ fewer people or less experienced people to keep passengers safe. But, I won't stop flying...I think we got spoiled a little bit over the years since 9/11...I can't remember a huge incident in America happening since the New York crash that happened shortly after 9/11.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
