If the Democrats are for the poor and the Republicans are for the rich why do we still have so many poor?

Similar questions: Democrats poor Republicans rich.

Because none of them is really for the poor The Democrats say they are but they have to rely on the lobbyists for their money as much as anybody else. So as soon as they come to power they have to deliver everything that the rich special-interest groups might want. As a result, the people who really struggle to make ends meet are left behind. It seems that of you are rich, you are fine under any administration, while if you aren't, you will be left behind by everybody.

Ideologically, the two parties are quite distinct. But the economy is a different question altogether. I want to believe that the new administration will, in fact, make our lives easier for us, but I can't bring myself to trust that it will really happen.

We have been lied to so much by the Republicans and by the Democrats. It's so hard to place my trust in anyone until I see actual changes for the better in my own economical position and in that of the people I care about. I'm sorry for the pessimistic tone of my message.

It's just that in the present economic situation I find it next to impossible to be enthusiastic about Republicans or Democrats.

Vote democrat its easier than working" Because democrats believe in many social programs ie. ) food stamps, and umemployment payments. These give the poor little incentive to achieve high goals...and I mean really high goals...such as....a high school diploma..(sarcasm) .

That's a very good question, Rock. I look forward to reading the answers and the discussions. I do hope this question gets lots of activity. It is a key issue because so many people try to divide the parties into class war lines.

The Democrats have been in power since 2006. Why do we still have so many poor? Why didn't everyone get out of poverty during the Clinton years?

It's very difficult to squeeze everyone in the entire country into only 2 political parties. That's what our political system is trying to do, though. It just doesn't work. There's too many differences to try to split the country into only 2 catagories.

First of all, you have many Democrats that are rich; it's a difference in philosophy not income. In the last eight years, the two parties have become more polarized. After the collapse of the stock market in 1929 (again, a Republican administration), it was FDR (D) that put regulations in place to prevent it from happening again, gave us unemployment insurance, and Social Security, creating a safety net for seniors, and built a strong middle class by creating jobs so that people could work and have dignity again.

Since Ronald Reagan's administration there has been a great effort to dismantle those regulations, and decrease government's role to protect its citizens. This has created individual wealth but has contributed to an indifferent and calloused society. Sort of like "Let them eat cake" attitide attributed to Marie Antoinette.

Also, the deregulation has contributed to our meltdown today when the watchword was greed, and the climate was buy, buy, even if you have to put it on plastic. All those loans given to people that couldn't afford their mortgage payments resulted in defaults. Greenspan said he never counted on the fact that business men would be unethical.

Well, we are learning the hard way that certain regulations have to be in place to prevent unethical behavior, and we can't depend on corporations or their CEOs to be on their honor. Teddy Roosevelt (R) had trouble with the robber barons of his time. We have a generation of adults that weren't around in 1929, so they don't know of the hard times that this country went through, but they are about to find out.

We are in terrible shape: two wars, a massive deficit, and a financial meltdown. In general, Republicans champion corporate America, self-sufficiency, and very little government involvement in the lives of its citizens. There is a philosophy that says, "I made it, and you don't deserve a penny of my earnings."

That pretty much dooms the underprivileged in our country. Democrats believe that government has a role in society with social programs to help the less fortunate. Not all of us can go to Harvard or get a Masters or Doctorate degree.

Some citizens have to go to work right out of high school but they hold down jobs and support their families; these people were the backbone of the middle class until their jobs were shipped overseas. Why are there so many poor? Well, many in society are not born into good financial situations.

You can argue pro and con why the poor have so many children, but lack of health care, birth control, ignorance, etc. , plays a part. Democrats are more interested in helping this group at the bottom of our ladder, but we will never eradicate this group. We can only help them to help themselves.

Even Jesus said, "The poor will always be with us. " But, Democrats are more inclusive to the different in our society, poor, black, immigrant, gay, disabled, elderly. Sarah Palin does not represent the majority of Americans as evidenced by the outcome of the election.

Republicans have to reorganize themselves, take back their party from the religious right, become more moderate, and align themselves with our changing population. And I would add, become a little more compassionate. You need more people like Chuck Hagel (R) to influence the party.

Kick people like Russ Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity, who spew hatred and derisiveness, to the curb. Let's stop being Democrats and Republicans and become Americans again..

The premise is indeed faulty. The myth persists that Democrats for "for the poor", but they are really for Power: personal political power, top down government power over everything from the courts to laws to overreaching imposition even into the minutiae of daily life. To keep their Power, Democrats enjoy playing Robin Hood: stealing from the wealthy and giving handouts of OTHER PPL's MONEY to the poor, who will take these illgotten monies in exchange for their votes.

Where the Democrats want, and NEED to keep the lower social stratum low, and design social systems to achieve this result, actually the Republicans truly want to help the poor to succeed and have the possibility to move up and out of the constraints of poverty. And ---most interestingly--- it is Republicans, NOT Democrats, who are most giving to the poor through charities, by a large factor. This fact alone says more about which party is more "for the poor" than anything else ever will.

Your premise is faulty. You need to re-phrase your question. Republicans are for solving the problem yourself.

Democrats are for government helping solve the problem. "There ain't a dime's worth of difference between the two of them. " --George Wallace .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
