I have switched all of my indoor light bulbs from the incandescent type to the compact fluorescent type. The bulbs I have been using indoors state that they are not to be used with dimmers or photocells. So today I bought a Sylvania bulb, which was labeled as an Indoor/Outdoor light bulb. (Sylvania Soft White 100 watt replacement bulb, using 30 watts.
1 CFL bulb, model BOMBILLA.) There was nothing on the carton about not using with dimmers or photocells. It was only after I opened the clamshell packaging, and unfolded the the insert, that there was the same warning I had seen on the other bulbs. Being stubborn, and needing a light bulb, I put it in my outdoor fixture.
Well, instead of lasting "5 years", it lasted about an hour. Needless to say, I am taking it back to Lowe's, but am I looking for a type of bulb that doesn't exist? I had been using the "long-lasting" incandescent bulbs for this fixture.(I also plan to send an email to Sylvania as well.)Thanks!

Ahem* standard motion sensors are not compatible with and lamps other than incandescent(halogen) Standard dimmers also do not get along with CFL lamps, but there is usually not a problem with photocell controls, as long as they are not the screw-into-the-socket style, which reduce the voltage to the bulb in order to make an incandescent bulb last longer. If you want to make your motion sensing fixture more energy efficient, you will want to shop for the whole fixture. There are motion sensing fixtures available that are fitted for fluorescent lamps.
I’d give you a few part numbers, but I can’t find my Heath-Zenith (the most common retail brand) catalog at the moment. I’ll see what I can pull up on an amazon search. TheLightWorks's Recommendations ACE COMPACT FLUORESCENT MOTION SENSOR Amazon List Price: $65.09 Well... there's lots of searching involved, it seems, but here's proof that they exist..
1 I don't think its fair that you return the light which you blew because you were simply "stubborn" and didn't want to heed the warning on the package. It's also not fair to blame the company because the light didn't last. Take responsibility for being stubborn and next time buy the light that is required for the fixture.

Caseycat*** replied to post #1: 2 Actually, I didn't return it after all. And because the warning was not on the outer package, where it *should* have been, I didn't know that I had bought the wrong bulb for the job until I got the package open. So yeah, I ate the (expensive) price of the bulb, and did send an email to Sylvania, asking them to please put that kind of info on the outside packaging, and not just on the inside insert.
And I got no response. And I also got no help finding a "green" light for this fixture, which is why I asked the question in the first place. I do have a few comments about what you wrote, however.
First off, I am wondering why you are responding to a question that is nearly TWO YEARS OLD? Second, as I see you are brand-new to Askville, I would suggest that you look around a little, maybe get a feel for the place, before you start making judgmental posts. Newbies are always welcome, and we are generally a pretty friendly bunch, but I can tell you that posts like the one you have left here, that added nothing to the situation except your criticism, is not the way to begin.
JMHO, of course, and you can take it for what it is worth.KatherinePS. I am sending this to you in a PM, as well as posting it, so that I will know that you saw it. Welcome to Askville.

Replied to post #2: 3 Just when I thought I saw it all, you're being chastised for a questions you asked 2 years ago. I do hope if the newbie stays, he/she will offer some helpful advice.

4 Well, at least we know that NOTHING has a shelf life on Askville. Maybe we've accidentally stumbled on the FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH?!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
