Is there a natural remedy for a 10 month old's cough?

Family Nurse Practitioner Student, Nurses|Registered Nurse Dogs and infants are not quite the same. For a congested cough, a humidifier is a great thing with just simple water. There was a recent study that came out about Vick's Vapor Rub.DO NOT use this in the humidifier or on the child at all.

The study found that Vick's actually makes the cough and congestion worse, this is because it is a cough surpressant, so it keeps the phlegm in the lungs. In generally for an infant I would not use any cough suppressant (that includes dextromethorphan:DM as well). A simple humidifier, and running a hot shower and staying with the child in the steamy room for about 15-20 minutes can really help.

Does the child have a fever? If so, infant tylenol (if the child is not allergic) and doctor. If he/she is congested in her nose then a suction bulb will help get the mucus out of the nose.

Also key: hydration. This will make the mucus more fluid, which will decrease the irritation of the phlegm on the lungs--thus less cough.In general, you should consult with your provider, seeing as the child is getting over a cold, but those are some releaving treatments.

Many remedies, even natural, aren't ok until 12 months. But homeopathy is generally safe--if the remedy doesn't work, it's inert. This is if the child is not on any other medicines or medical treatments.

Do not put Vicks on your dog--they have a very strong sense of smell and it could be harmful. However, you can put it around her to help her breath.
