I've a friend who wants to get rid of her two cats because they are urinating outside the litter box - what choices?

I really need some ideas as opposed to the alternative of being rid of her pets . Asked by lx102303 3 months ago Similar questions: friend rid cats urinating litter box choices Pets > Cats.

Cats are very clean animals, if their box isn't cleaned daily, many cats will avoid using them, Some cats just don't like to share either, rule of thumb is 1 box per cat and 1 spare, Clean them a minimum of once a day, preferably twice, morning and night. Don't use perfumey foo foo cat litter, it may smell nice to us, but can be over powering to cats. Make sure the boxes are private, if its in a high traffic area they may avoid it.

Don't use a covered box, it traps the odors inside, put them in private but well ventilated areas. AND when was the last time both cats were seen by a vet? If its been awhile, a check up wouldn't hurt to rule our a physical problem.

Trekincat rocks! I'll share this with my friend . Thanks for the wonderful answer!

You're very welcome, let us know how things turn out .

I will! I hope she does what is right! (I have to keep reminding myself that she'll be reading this and so I've got to watch what I say!)=^,,^= lx102303 3 months ago .

Wow! Trekincat, you rock! You covered everything I could think of!

I will say that, because both are urinating outside the box, it is more likely to be a box/litter/location problem, and those things can be remedied. But a trip to the vet, for both cats, is in order. If making the changes trekincat has suggested doesn't fix the problem, and there are no medical problems (like bladder or urinary tract problems, or diabetes, or renal failure), there are medications that the vet can prescribe that will help: fluoxetine/Prozac, amitriptyline, or Clomicalm (a dog drug that is used, off-label, for cat urinary problems.)Give your friend all this info, maybe even print it off for her.

Then, if she has any questions, post again (in a new question), and we will give it another shot. :)Kat .

Caseycat*** rocks too! Thanks so much for a great answer! I'll let my friend read this and hopefully she'll change her mind!

There should be at least three seperate, uncovered litter boxes, preferably in seperate rooms or at least as far apart as possible. If possible clean them at least twice a day, morning and night, and wash them at least monthly using bleach and hot water with unscented detergent (Use Rubber Gloves! ).

Try clumping litter as it's the easiest way to keep their litter box(es) clean. And give them privacy when they are using their littr box. Avoid strongly scented litter, and feed them in a location as far from the litter boxes as possible (would you like to eat in an unclean bathroom?) I hope this helps your cats, and you, Sneaker2.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
