Most of us here (I believe) were invited to Askville via an e-mail from Amazon...was this a "random sample" of people?

I ask because I know plenty of people with Amazon accounts that were never invited, and I'm not sure why I was. Is it just because they are in Beta, and can't give out too many invites? Thank you for any of your thoughts on this.

I’ve wondered about this too. I’ve written a lot of reviews on and bought a lot of books from Amazon but I didn’t get an invite. In late December or early January one of the Amazon people came to the Amazon Review Discussion Board and posted a notice about Askville.

He invited everyone on the DB to come over and check it out. That’s what ended up getting me here. I just wanted to see what was going on.

I can’t imagine how they decided who to send an invite to. Back when Amazon started selling groceries they sent me a big free box of samples so I know that they know I’m around. Maybe it did involve something that certain people purchased.

That’s as good of a theory as I have heard. Sources: just my randomly crappy thoughts KingofRandomCrap's Recommendations H5400X Dart Board in Wood Cabinet Amazon List Price: $189.95 Maybe they threw darts at a list of names.

Not sure how "random" it was... "You’re Invited! As a valued Amazon customer, you’ve been specially picked to get an early look at a new website Amazon has just launched called Askville. Askville is a place where you can ask any question on any topic and get real answers from real people. It’s a fun place to meet others with similar interests to you and a place where you can share what you know.

You can learn something new every day or help and meet others using your knowledge. It’s new, and best of all, it’s free!" Of course, I got this email in April of 2007 - and Askville had been up for nearly a year at the time, so my "early" look wasn't that early.

I spend a lot of money at Amazon, so I'm not sure how much they used purchasing records for their email invites. If anything, they probably mined the demographics and hit up their MTurkers. Many people just got here from the Amazon search menu, which will pop up a banner like this: .

I thought it was because I am an Amazon Visa card holder. I make purchases from Amazon every month and use my card several times a month. If that's not why I was invited, it certainly could have been random..

1 Beats me! - since I was never freakin' invited. That's right Amazon, I've got your number now!

You don't think PenguinSage would've been a valuable addition. Uh-huh. Oh well they're stuck with me now anyway.

That is how I started using askville myself! I don't know anyone else personally that uses this site.

I started using askville actually on my own! I wasn't asked too by anyone. I was looking at things on amazon and saw a link to ask a question so I did-but I had to sign up here so I did that.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
