My PS1 memory card won't work in my PS2. I can't save my game?

My PS1 memory card won't work in my PS2. I can't save my game. I have a PS1 memory card, and I want to use it in my PS2.

Yet when I put it in the first memory card slot, the game freezes up. (The music keeps playing, but I can't move or do anything. ) When I put it in the second slot, the PS2 won't recognize the card.
