Probably because he has a SATA hard drive And XP does not have any drivers for SATA. You must have a floppy drive available with a SATA driver disk. Shortly after booting up the XP install CD, it asks whether you want to load any external drivers (I think you have to hit F3,but the instructions are clear).

Once you do that it continues loading the drivers it needs and it will at some point load a SATA driver from you floppy disk. The disk drive will then be properly initialized and mounted, ready for installation of the OS to proceed.

Before the Windows installer loads, you need to hit F6 when it prompts you so you can load the SATA drivers. You'll have to track down the drivers and put them on a floppy disk unless your system allows USB devices at this step (most older system do not). You can also look in the BIOS to see if there are any SATA controller settings you can tweak.

If it's not a SATA drive, just make sure your cables are fitting snug and the jumpers are set correctly on the drive.
