Two things I learned that kind of surprised me are: 1) In seeing the discussions on political and social issues, I realized that most people do not have much confidence in their fellow citizens' abilities to make reasonable decisions. People lack confidence more than I realized. 2) In discussing the issue of school vouchers I expected the main opposition to be economic (teacher pay, control of public funds, etc.), but it wasn't.

The main and most repeated opposition was that giving parents the ability to choose their kids education would result in many of them choosing an education that was favorable to religious beliefs. The idea that people would settle for a lower quality education for their children, your children and everyone else's children as long as it was hostile towards religion was a real shocker to me.
