Need help settling a dispute in my family regarding nutrition/parenting. I know I can count on Askville! (see details) My 9 year old daughter loves iced tea.
She loves it in spite of the fact that she has only had sips of it on occasion because the women folk in my family believe that it is bad for her. Is it? Or is it just not desirable because it has caffeine?
At what age is it appropriate for a young person to drink tea? I am thankful my daughter does not drink carbonated beverages (at all) or juice (much), but the water and occasional milk routine is getting kind of old. Should we let my daughter drink iced tea?

Sorry, but this question makes me laugh! I grew up in a home where the coffee pot was plugged in 24 hours a day, and that was back in the 50's. I was drinking coffee from the age of 6 and on.My parents drank it all day, and I had access whenever I wanted it.
I had coffee with milk and no sugar, and black. I am now almost 60, and I still love my coffee in the morning, though I don't drink it all day. Not because I try to "restrain" myself, but just because I don't desire it all day like they did.
My father had his pot turned on all day, till he had to go into a nursing home at the age of 95. I know what the health experts say, about EVERYTHING. I don't believe most of it.
Half the time I don't think they know what they are talking about. These days, everything is bad for you. You might as well drink purified water and eat home grown vegetables, and that's about it.
I truly don't believe it will hurt your daughter, and soda would be much worse for her, with all the additives. I wouldn't sweat it. She'll probably be fine.
Just my old fashioned common sense and experience with coffee addicts. If you are really concerned, maybe you could make some ice tea with the "politically correct" teas that are out there. Green tea.

Black, Green or Oolong.....Tea is good for you. And, for your 9-year old daughter... Don't take my word for it, though, here is a quote from webmd, "The health benefits of tea are one compelling reason: Green and black teas have 10 times the antioxidants found in fruits and veggies, by one estimate. " When people drink something, your daughter included, they are drinking that beverage as opposed to another.
If your daughter is drinking iced tea instead of soda, diet or otherwise, she is doing herself a major favor. Soda may be the number one worst beverage a person could consume. Except, of course, for an arsenic laced drink in an Agatha Christie mystery novel.
If she would otherwise be drinking fruit juice, she is still better off. Most fruit juices are way over-rated and are often as bad for humans as colas are due to the amount of sugar often added to the juices. Regarding the caffeine, you can very easily observe your daughter's behavior to determine if caffeine is a factor.
Personally, I would just use decaf tea if I were you. Fact is, that is what we use. I am a big coffee drinker, often consuming more than 5 cups a day, and I also drink another 24 ounces or so of tea.
I use Harris's decaf green tea. Here's another quote, this one from the Reader's Digest, "Tea, whether black or green, caffeinated or decaffeinated (herbal teas don't count), has spectacular antioxidant capabilities owing to large amounts of substances called flavonoids. In addition to preventing oxidation, flavonoids may have an anticlotting effect.
One study found that among people who'd had heart attacks, those who drank 14 or more cups of tea a week were 44 percent less likely to die in the 3 1/2 years following their heart attacks than those who didn't drink any tea. In another study people who drank about 1 1/2 cups of tea daily had roughly half the risk of heart attack of those who didn't drink tea. An added bonus: A cup of black tea has less than half the caffeine of coffee; green tea has even less."
The big issue for people here will probably be your daughter's age. I called my doctor (you might consider calling your pediatrician) for his opinion. He said, "... if it's caffeine free she can pretty much have all she wants - it's good for her."
I gave my kids tea, in small amounts at first and you said, "She loves it in spite of the fact that she has only had sips of it on occasion..." so we've probably both done the same thing. My kids are grown now, and doing fine, both being the picture of health. It may very well be the case that you can't take in too many antioxidants, or too early in life either.

We keep it sweet and lo cal with no caffine... 1 gallon jug 3 Caffine free (large) iced tea bags 3 quarts of water 1 quart of apple juice 4 oz. Raspberry syrup It comes out to about 35 calories per 12 oz.

Let her enjoy it Let her enjoy it. Esp if its unsweetened. If its sweetend keep an eye on the sugar.It won't hurt her.
It is better for her than soda and if you can get her to put a slice of lemon in each glass it will have some vit c as well in it for her. Kids in the UK drink warm tea a lot.In the old days it was thought that the caffine in tea was what made kids be all hyper and act out. They have now found that is not the case.
The amount of caffine they need to injest is a lot more than 2 glasses of tea woudl have in it even if she drank 2 per hour for 4 hours. Then she would be in teh bathroom every 30 minutes for several more hours. Even 1 soda twice a day is not bad for kids, the key is moderation.
Yes juice, milk and water are better, but get boring after a while. And if the caffine and sugar is controled and monitors its fine. 2 of my boys actually get a soda at thir first break/recess as its helps balance thier adhd better.

I think the only true issue would be if you add sugar to the tea. Don't let her get hooked on sugar!.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
