Three modes, no shuffle within playlist docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=... Shuffle Songs feature randomly plays songs (skipping audiobooks) from your entire music collection. Shuffle Songs is available from the main menu on all iPods (except iPod shuffle) that have the latest version of iPod software installed. You can also put your iPod in Shuffle mode all the time.

Shuffle Songs works with most of the Shuffle and Repeat options under the Settings menu:Shuffle * Off - Shuffle Songs overrides this setting and shuffles the songs. * Songs - Shuffle Songs respects this setting and shuffles the songs with no consideration for albums. * Albums - Shuffle Songs shuffles albums.

Songs that are on the same album are played in succession. Repeat * Off - Shuffle Songs plays through songs once and returns to the main menu. * One - Shuffle Songs plays one song and repeats it until you stop it, or until the battery is empty.

* All - Shuffle Songs plays through all songs until you stop it, or until the battery is empty. Songs are played repeatedly in the same shuffle order. IPod does not reshuffle after every pass through its library.

Audiobooks purchases from Audible. Com or the iTunes Store are skipped. Audiobooks you imported from an audio CD are not skipped.

==Learn about the Shuffle feature in iPod software 1.1 and later. SongsWhen Shuffle is set to Songs iPod plays songs from the selected list (album, playlist, or library) in a random order. Songs are not repeated until iPod has played through the entire list.

Pausing a song does not affect the random order. However, if you turn iPod off by pressing and holding the Play/Pause button it will not remember the random order or the selected playlist. If you have Shuffle set to Songs, and repeat set to All, iPod randomly plays songs from the playlist.

When each song in the playlist has been played, iPod plays the list again, this time with a different random order. AlbumsIf you make make these selections: Artists > All > All, then press the Play button, iPod will choose an album at random and play it in its entirety. IPod will then shuffle to another album and play it in its entirety.

Albums are not repeated until iPod has played through the entire list. If you choose a song from the Songs list, iPod will play that song, then the remainder of the album associated with that song. IPod will then shuffle to another song in the Songs list, play it, then play the remainder of the album associated with that song.

For example, if iPod chooses track 8 on an album with 15 tracks, Album shuffle will play tracks 8 through 15 of that album, but not 1 through 7. Sources: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93922 .

You can shuffle selections Under Settings on you iPod, you need to turn Shuffle from Off to Songs (or Albums but I've never bothered using that setting). After that, anything you select (album, playlist, etc), the songs (after the first) will be shuffled. Sources: Experience .

On mine... If, from the main menu, under Settings->Shuffle, it is set to "Shuffle the Entire Music Library", but then I only select a certain Music->Playlist or Album to play, then just the songs from that playlist or album are shuffled through. Sources: personal experience .

1 Hmm, based on Basilisk answer, the Settings menu must be slightly different on different models of iPod. My answer's specifics pertain to the iPod Nano 1.0 (and probably some others).
