Should the citizens of Illinois have any say in whether Gitmo detainees are placed in their state?

Of course they should have a say. The caliber of this issue is much more weighing than say, "Should we shut off the air conditioning in our capital building to save money? " Personally, I would outraged if terrorist detainees were shipped to my state.

Although all detained terrorists are not proven to be guilty what about the ones that are? This is the ivy league prison for terrorists in waiting. Why on earth make it easier for them to already be on US soil when they are released?

Why shut down a facility that is already built and set up? To spend more of our hard earned tax dollars? It has been stated that there are in house problems there (torture, etc.); why not clean the place up and rewrite and enforce new guidelines.

What could the possible benefits be of moving Gitmo? It could provide more jobs, building and running a prison. Would this outweigh the cons?

I don't think so if even one terrorist was released and had already crafted a plan for destroying even one life on US soil. Why make it easier for them by providing a think tank here, it just makes it easier for them. They won't have to worry about getting here, they would already be here.

I wanted to add that people of any state can always contact their state representatives, this can make a difference. And the money that would have been put into a new Gitmo could be diverted into other job avenues, how about more jobs in a green sector to help us reduce our dependance on oil.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
