Something gets stolen and it has an electronic serial number... how come the theif cannot be identified?

We had a man walk into an EB Toys in Stafford a couple of Xmases ago with a handgun he robbed the store saying "Give me your Xbox machines. " He took 2 machine and a number of games to play on them. Undoubtedly for Xmas presents.

No doubt those machines are on Xbox Live now... the system shares serial numbers, etc electronically and the person possessing these maching can be determined through their IP address. Why aren't the police going after these kinds of crimes? They aren't.

This goes for stolen iPods, XM radios, Sirrus radios, cell phones, etc... all very traceable. What is going on here? Asked by JayD 49 months ago Similar questions: stolen electronic serial number theif identified Society.

I think that they may be many reasons 1. Police are overwhelmed by the volume of these crimes. The goods you mentioned are cheap (Lack of sophistication to know that the device has an electronic serial no.

3. On the part of the manufacturer, no financial incentive to track down stolen units. I guess replacing a stolen unit actually means more business for them 4.

They have not implemented a "call home" feature 5. Privacy concerns mean they don’t track serial numbers for anything other than warranty 6. Public has not demanded it 7.

Cost to implement -- cheaper to just replace the stolen units than create databases, keep record, updated, set up infrastructure/liason between police and manufacturers, update product designs etc .

Because of the various police departments .. A larger police department probably has the equipment to identify electronic tags, but most smaller police agencies don't even try to see if there is an electronic tag, just not worth their time. (And they probably don't have the equipment anyway...) I would think it's the magnitude or value of the equipment - I can't imagine the police checking every stolen cellphone or "low priced gadget" they recover, its just too much effort. Happy Holidays, JD!.

It's easier to pass along the losses to you and me! That's right. Why waste your time and money tracking down and prosecuting petty theft, when you can just pass that loss on to your customers?

Stores can just jack up the prices to cover those losses, and customers continue to buy. A lot of theft also involves stolen credit card information. If everyone who was paying ridiculously high prices on interest rates on credit cards refused to pay them, you can bet companies would have to start watching their profits and losses more diligently, and would put more effort into risk management.

Why bother when we are willing to cover those losses for them by paying 13% and more for credit card purchases? The only way you can stop supporting disregard for theft is to hold them more accountable, by either not using credit cards, or paying them in full every month; and by refusing to pay exorbitantly high prices.

Because it's not that easy... It would be a lot easier to triangulate a cellphone. If the consoles were not scanned in before it was given to the robber... no trace was made. And with no identification of the said console, even if the consoles went online it would not be identified.

I know it sucks, but that's the way it is... Anyway, I hope it never happens again.

1 pfzlsk, regarding your answer "I think that they may be many reasons": I think the companies have a disincentive to get involved... after all a cell phone gets stolen they then sell a new cell phone to the vitim... the perp get a free phone and puts it on-line (celluar service)... and more money.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
