Well, what do you think of cutting off unemployment insurance for the jobless just in time for the holidays?

These are the same people that are arguing to continue the tax cuts to the top 2% of our population who are wealthy. Asked by MaryAnn 13 months ago Similar questions: cutting unemployment insurance jobless time holidays Politics & Law.

I just think of it as "government as usual. " .

This is the new government everybody voted for. Just the beginning. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

There are a lot of working mothers in favor of it from what I've seen on facebook etc. They think enough is enough. I'd think some compromising would work.

I agree that this can't go on forever but to cut them off before the holidays is callous. At least extend it to Jan. 1. Working mothers on Face Book think it's a good idea?

I wonder what they would think if they weren't working. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

You know I'd love to ask that but I value my scalp too much:)They will extend the tax cuts and probably cut unemploment extensions come February or March, I'd guess.

We gave the big banks and GM all the money they needed. I feel fairly certain that dropping unemployment benefits is not going to create jobs. With millions of people without income, you can expect social unrest, crime to increase, and the swat team busy 24/7.

Suicide, divorce, and murder rates will probably jump up in areas hardest hit. It's all local and it's all relative to where you live.

Change the unemployment extensions to low interest loans and defer them for awhile. Some form of compromise is needed.

I think you are right about your predictions of society going to hell and those fat cats in Washington who are insulated don't feel responsible. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

Effectively, what they will be doing is cutting off the poorest, and giving a bonus to the richest..All, with taxpayer money....It's an economic wash.. A crap shoot hoping against hope that the richest will be so grateful, that they'll give all those people jobs...Insanity! However, just how long can the government continue to justify unemployment benefits?

Agree with your answer--all of it. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

Extend benefits through the holidays--give people a joyus holiday"THEN take them out and shoot them....During the recession of 1982, extended benefits were about 2 1/2 years..As an employer, nearly everyone that had ever worked for me was collecting...I had to kick in an additional $3000 per month to the fund, just to cover them...Today, the upper crust gets a bonus....

And next year companies will start hiring if the Bush tax cuts are extended .BS. They had the tax cuts for years and did not create jobs. Why would they start now?

It doesn't make sense to me...trickle down economics. We saw what happened with Wall Street; we kept them from failing and they gave themselves huge bonuses. It's human nature to be greedy.

That's one way to begin balancing this bleeding-red-ink budget, but not the best way, I think. How about our Congressional Representatives get paid a dollar a day for showing up and live off their speaking fees for a year while they find something else to cut, say, foreign wars? .

That's a good idea. I think they could have extended the unemployment until Jan. 1; it would have seen them through the holidays. I can't bear to think of children suffering.

MaryAnn 13 months ago .

Nobody cares a jot unless it affect them directly. They have to lose their jobs to care.

I agree. No one feels the pain until they are in that situation. I keep thinking of what a lousy holiday those people are going to have.

They're not cutting off unemployment for the holidays. They're simply choosing not to extend unemployment beyond 99 WEEKS! Keep in mind that the standard unemployment is 26 weeks.

Unemployment has been stretched almost to a welfare benefit! This isn't Europe. It's not suppose to last forever.

There are a lot of Christmas jobs available right now, and next year companies will start hiring if the Bush tax cuts are extended and the Republicans succeed in getting rid of the worst of the Obamacare and financial regulations! .

That's the Republican point of view that didn't work for the Bush administration when they allowed the banks and Wall Street to play fast and loose with the taxpayer's money (thus, regulations) because they can't be trusted to do the right thing for the country over their own greed. It's like the old story of putting the fox in charge of the chicken coup and expecting him not to follow his nature. If manufacturing jobs hadn't been transferred overseas, entire segments of our society would still have jobs, and thus wouldn't need health care. It's not the best plan in the world because Republicans wouldn't work with the president, throwing out lies, scaring seniors and putting a wrench in the process to make it fail.

Consquently, we have a plan that isn't that great that we could have had if Republicans had worked with Obama. But, the party of "no" was determined to sink Obama even if they took the country with it. We are in two wars, borrowing from China every week to keep our soldiers in equipment and bribing corrupt governments but that's okay with Republicans.

The Defense budget is one thing you never hear Republicans complain about but the poor senior on Social Security, and their relative in a nursing home must pay the price. Every war we have fought in our country has necessitated a tax hike. You can't keep emptying the pot without putting money back in.

Even Alan Greenspan said "he didn't expect business to behave the way it did, trusting that they would do the best for the country. " Your party has backrupted this country and your solution is to continue the same policies to reward the rich who have proved they do not put country first. It's voodoo economics! This move to cut off unemployment insurance to the long-term jobless is understandable given our debt, but it shows just how heartless Republicans are about not extending it until at least Jan. 1, so American families can have a good holiday.

Millionaires think the unemployed are lazy. Part-time Christmas jobs are mainly retailing and they pay about $8.00 per hour and many men will do it or send their wives out to work in department stores while they take care of the kids. This is humiliating to grown men who are used to taking care of their families.

But, I see the same old thing from Republicans--extend the tax cuts to the wealthy so they will create jobs. It hasn't worked because those very same people are making a profit by laying off workers and still giving bonuses to their CEOs. Again, the working stiff is paying the price.

We need money; why don't I hear "Let's let the tax cuts expire so we bring in more revenue to help us pay our bills. " Everyone is suffering in this economy except the Warren Buffet's who said a while ago that his secretay paid more taxes than he did. This country is in trouble and there are wealthy people sitting on their butts while we are slowly being owned by China.

Republicans talk about patriotism a lot; it's time for the rich to step up to the plate and help this country. It's not going to happen by passing the buck to the middle class who is diminishing as we speak. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

The timing is ghastly but I know unemployment benefits have been greatly extended in many places. A compromise might be to at least to wait until January so people can have a little bit of joy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Right you are...at least give everyone a decent holiday. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

It makes perfect sense for Republicans to cut off unemployment insurance, while at the same time advocating a $750 billion tax cut for the rich.

As for Republicans refusing to extend unemployment insurance, I'm sure they would relish being called the Grinch who stole Christmas. It fits their persona to a tee.

The Executive Branch is one of three equal branches of government. Spending is controlled by Congress. During Bush's years as president he either had a small majority or no majority at all in the House and the Senate.

The Dems have had the Congress since the 2006 elections (almost 4 years) and all 3 branches since the 2008 election. In addition, the majority when BHO took office was bullet proof. So blaming everything on one guy (Bush) is as stupid as blaming everything on Obama. It takes the effort of all 3 branches of government to get us into the mess we are in.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

I'm starting to expect someone to say "let them eat cake" .

And next year companies will start hiring if the Bush tax cuts are extended and the Republicans succeed in getting rid of the worst of the Obamacare and financial regulationsemployee = tax deduction. Businesses only hire if their current staff cannot handle the workload, and that ain't going to happen unless the consumers have money to consume with.

Let them eat cake. " Yes, and we are slowly becoming a monarchy and the peasants. What ever happened to the middle class that made this country great and different than Europe?

After 9/11, the people lost sight of what was happening in the Bush administration. No one opposed policies that weren't paid for like two wars, Medicare Part D, manufacturing jobs transferred overseas; now, we are paying the piper. MaryAnn 13 months ago .

They believed the line that the elite was feeding them: that if they would give financial control to the wealthy, the wealth would be spontaneously shared.indeed. Those people skeptical of the Bush regime notice that his popularity figures are directly linked to the two wars...

Finish off the year, but it has to end sometime......

My husband gets unemployment insurance and is now disabled can he I file for disabiliy insurance.

How did insurance companies get the law past that ever one must have auto insurance.

Can I collect unemployment while collecting social security disability insurance.

How the owner of a business can file for unemployment insurance.

Is there ever a time when it's o.k. To take the law into your own hands?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
