I had a great experience with Lufthansa. When flying in and out of Paris a few years ago, I flew Lufthansa and had a great experience. The flight attendants were constantly coming around offering food and beverages, including alcoholic ones for free.
But, of course if you wanted to sleep, they did not bother you. And, the food was amazing. I believe they hired some famous chef to design their meals for them, and I have to say it was one of the most amazing meals I ever ate on an airline.
SAS Obviously I can’t say it is the best since I haven’t flown with all possible carriers, but here is my ordered list for coach from worst to best from my own experience: Northwest (lots of delays, cancelled flights, standard US service) United (standard US service) British (better standard european service, but annoying layover in Heathrow will add hours to your trip, and increase likelyhood of delayed (or lost) luggage (Heathrow has one of the worst records)) SAS (prime european service, excellent Kopenhagen airport facilities, and small size of airport allows for layovers as short as 60 minutes) for busines class British beats SAS.
Virgin Atlantic Virgin Atlantic has fantastic service to London and is worth the extra few bucks. Unfortunately, you can only fly V/A if you're going to London because they don't serve other European destinations. virgin-atlantic.com/en/us/whatsonboard/e... I've also flown Alitalia to Italy and they offer very nice service as well.
Continental back in the day used to be good but I've not flown them in several years. Depending on where you're going I'd recommend foreign airlines over American ones -- the amenities and service are usually just better (British Airways, Air France, etc. -- though I've read awful things about Iberia, Spain's national airline). It's a sad state of affairs, the shape the U.S. owned/operated airlines are in...but I could be wrong.
Where ya going? .
Virgin Air is the only one I've ever used, and I can recommend it highly. I’ve only gone to Europe one time, I went to London in 2000. I live in St. Paul, MN, so it worked out well for me to hop on a short flight to Chicago where there’s a Virgin hub, and fly out of there.
I haven’t flown a lot in my life, but it’s always been Coach, always in cramped seats...never had exactly a "fun" experience on a plane. But I got on board this flight, and even though it was just coach, it was beyond what I would have expected from first class. I pass that small area of seats every time I fly and it’s like OK, the seats are slightly bigger and farther apart, but they’re nothing special...and sure you can get free drinks, but that alone doesn’t make up the price difference.
I always kind of felt like for the most part, First Class was really a ripoff. But Virgin Air...man alive, I had a great time on this flight. The seats were wide, and had tons of leg room (I’m 6’2" and I’m also wider in stature, so both things were quite welcome.
But it was so nice, the aisles were wider, so it wasn't like the flight attendants were trying to squeeze an aisle sized cart down the aisle...they had plenty of room to manouver. And there was no restrictions on what you could drink, you could have anything you wanted no extra charge. They brought us a delicious hot meal, and at about 10pm, they brought us a goodie bag with night time gear including a toothbrush, slippers, all sorts of nice comforts so you could get some sleep.
And if you didn't want to sleep, built into the back of the headrest in front of you was an imbedded TV, which got a lot of channels...you could see current run movies, certain TV shows, listen to radio from around the world, play Nintendo games or even chart the progress/trajectory of the aircraft. If you were still awake at 3am, you could partake in Bailey's service...they walked around giving everyone Baileys if they wanted it. They kept us well hydrated, were at the beck and call of the passengers, etc. Even the bathrooms were more spacious than what I'd expect on a domestic flight.
The pilot kept us informed without being intrusive, and it was an incredibly smooth flight as well. I don't know if all or many airlines are this good for overseas service, but if and when I go back, I have no intention of finding out, I'll stick with VA.
These have been great - Virgin and BA Virgin Airlines and British Airways .
