Strong female main character, fascinating adventures, and good values in well-written books. This series of books (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet) follow the adventures of Meg Murray, a mathematically-gifted female character, and her extraordinary younger brother Charles Wallace as they struggle through space and time to save their father, Charles Wallace's life, and finally the entire world. Meg is a brilliant young woman with normal self-esteem problems; in the first book, A Wrinkle in Time, she is half-convinced she is hideously unattractive, but by the end of the series, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, both she and her self-image have matured and she has become confident and strong.
Throughout the series, the protagonists fight against dark forces of chaos and evil by promoting love, harmony, and compassion; but the books are all tightly-written and fast-paced, and never dip into treacly sentimentality. They stand up to re-reading and have remained favorites of mine from the first time I read them (at age eleven) to the present--and I'm thirty-four, and have passed them on to my own eleven-year-old. Some great reads: Most definitely getting into the classics is a good start. My daughter is 8, and these are some of her favorites! I'd go for Little Women by Louisa May Alcott It's fun for girls to take a look back in time to see how it was, and this novel is timeless, where the girls within are so different in personality, that any reader can see a bit of themselves in at least one character.
ALL of the Little House books. They're great and they're not filled with a bunch of negativity! Laura Ingalls Wilder was a genius storyteller.
Matilda - by Roald Dahl This book about a little girl who's just misunderstood and was born into the wrong family will keep any little girl entertained! Junie B. Jones (any of the series) - by Barbara Park.
While these are targetted for younger children, they are incredibly fun and FUNNY. I enjoy reading these myself, because Junie B. Jones is just so precocious!
:D Ramona (any of the series) - Beverly Cleary surely knew what she was doing when she wrote about Ramona Quimby! Also check out Socks! It's such a good book!Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books by Betty MacDonald.
Learning the "proper" way is always so much nicer when it comes from Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle! And last but not least, DO get some of the Amelia Bedelia books! They're always good for a giggle, and make great reading for slumber parties or mommy-daughter time!
There are soooo many more that I could suggest here, but these are a few of the "classic" favorites to get you started! .
The Little House, The Magic Treehouse and The Boxcar Children series My daughter loved The Little House series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, when she was about that age. There are so many, that once she gets hooked, she’ll be reading for a year. Both of my kids also liked The Magic Treehouse series, which takes two children back in time to learn about history in the first person, via the treehouse.
Again, a lengthy series of books, that will keep her going for awhile. Finally, there is The Boxcar Children series. Orphaned children manage to stick together to get through early tough times and end up enjoying adventures and solving mysteries in various locations.
Again, a very extensive series. My daughter loved them. My son wasn't as interested.
