Two benefits I know of myself ginger in any form has long been known to settle queasy stomachs. What has surprised me, though, is that it is a decent anti-inflammatory. I have arthritis and this can result in swelling around some joints, which adds to the pain occasionally.
Ginger helps reduce the swelling. It also works on one of our dogs who has arthritis. Both of us get around better about an hour after having some ginger.
I have a feeling that ginger does something else, but I have not read about it. I know that when I had migraines, years ago, someone told me to try taking a little cayenne pepper and that would reduce the pain. I figured it to be another 'miracle cure' nonsense, but it worked.
There would be a sting on my tongue and within about ten seconds my brain was evidently releasing enough endorphins (nature pain-killers similar to morphine) to dramatically reduce the level of pain. Ginger has the same sting on my tongue and it may be my imagination (who's to argue? ), but the pain of an arthritic joint does seem to reduce pretty significantly before I even swallow the stuff.
I did not expect that result, and it may have been coincidence. And it may have been a placebo effect ever since, but I do appreciate this effect, imaginary or not! We have a fairly large container of ginger root pieces which are 'candied', or coated with dried cane juice.
I also use fresh ginger root, grated, in some of our meat dishes and salads. There are lots of uses for ginger....My favorite is Ginger Ale............ Ginger was introduced from the East, I believe it comes from China! The ginger root is widely used in baking for it’s distinct taste, it has many uses from drinks, cooking, baking to medicinal. As a youngster back on the farm I remember the day my mom treated me with something other than castrol for a stomach ache man heaven on earth.
I don’t know how many out there remember castrol but those who do could swear your mom had no love for you because she forced it down. YUK! She had boiled up some water and add a small package containing ginger powder to a cup with a little sugar and said,"drink", that was tasty and at the same time helped my stomach!
The ginger root today is widely used by Holistic Dr.’s that use only plant extracts or that of their roots, they say ginger is great for stomach problems like: indigestion, gas, nausea, diarrhea and cramps. It is also used to treat motion sickness, all forms of arthritis and blood circulation. Have you ever tried Altoids?
The maker of Altoids based out of Chicago have been making Altoids from a receipe developed over 200 yrs ago. My personal favorites are chocolate covered cinnamon, ginger and peppermint! They taste great especially the combination with chocolate, and because they are strong people have asked about my breath mint so I would say it work to kill bad breath aswell!
