What breed of dog is the most independent? The type that allows you to sleep on the couch all day long?

I have a rat terrier. He is very independent. He lets me know when he wants out, he does not get into the garbage and if I fall asleep on the couch, I wake up and he has fallen asleep with his head resting on my leg.

Warning though. By nature rat terriers are high strung, they do like to play and run. But they tend to entertain themselves.
