What is Unconditional Parenting?

Unconditional parenting addresses the ways in which parents think about, feel about, and act with their children. It doesn’t start with the children but with the parents. The following three ideas may help you understand this idea: • Show affection unconditionally not conditionally.

Unconditional Parenting is a book by Alfie Kohn. It is based on the premise that children need unconditional love. This book argues that traditional forms of discipline (i.e.

Time-out) and even positive praise only teach children that they are loved when they make their parents happy. To be brief, unconditional parenting encourages children to make more decisions on their own rather than just following directions. According to Kohn, "Punishment and rewards only get them to think about the consequences to themselves with the result that they become more self-centered rather than concerned about others' well-being."

Kohn was a featured on The Early Show}. A video of his interview and an outline of his theory can be found here: cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/28/earlyshow...
