It makes a difference! If you are in the U.S. There are options. For one thing public schools are required to provide equipment that facilitates education.
Most U.S. schools have laptops that can be checked out as "assistive technology" for students with disabilities. Mom will have to go in and demand access to the equipment but it is within her rights under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) to do so. If the school gives you grief there are several adovocacy agencies that will be only too glad to jump in and settle the fight.
We have laptops designated for our sight impaired students because it is illegal to deny access to education based on a family's inability to purchase equipment. Public schools must provide the equipment necessary for their students to access the curriculum. Secondly, organizations such as AT&T Pioneers help provide equipment for sight and hearing impaired people.

They get a tax letter for donating the computer to the church. The church donates it to you. Help us out by posting your location and you might get more resources..
Braille computer I've never heard of a braille computer. My brother is blind and has a regular computer that has software for reading e-mail and certain text sites. It is a computerized voice which reads him everything on the screen.
I am central standard time and he most likely is eating his supper right now. I'll try to give him a call after his supper and ask. By the way, my brother is 61 and has been blind his whole life.
I still have a slate and stylus but I don't use it now that he has his computer all hooked upon and can listen to his e-mails. He still takes notes with his slate and stylus. I will get back to you!.
Try the lions club when my sister was needing glasses when she was younger the lions club helped to get her some glasses. They may also help you with a computer or know who to contact. Sources: I went to the lions web site .
1 Your special education teacher should have a list of places to buy & accomodations needed for a visually impaired student. Depending on how the state laws are written, it is possible the special education office would furnish a computer. I am not positive, but the odds greatly favor a free computer. An advocacy group for special education students would be a good place to get info about this if the school takes to long.
The law requires a free appropriate education for handicapped students. A computer is needed for your son to achieve success in school. If your son is to be educated with the intention of being employable upon completion of high school or to attend college, computer skills are a must.
I may be able to get specific info in needed. If you have any questions, just ask. Polite & Persistent is the way to go about it.

2 Pales it is not a matter of state law but you are on the right track. It is federal law and the school must provide equipment necessary to access education. If the school is not cooperative I would hunt down advocacy groups that specialize in assisting sight impaired people.
