Most likely, tilapia comes from a farm. These aquaculture farms are now found all over the world. Tilapia is now the #2 or #3 fish raised on farms, after carp and possibly salmon.

Over 800,000 metric tons of tilapia are produced through farms worldwide (Wikipedia said the number was closer to 1.5 million metric tons in 2002. ) tilapia was found in Ancient Egypt in the Nile River. It also goes by the name of St Peter’s Fish and is very popular in freshwater in the Mediterranean region.

I have eaten it from the Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias, from which the Jordan River flows). It is very low in mercury content which makes it an attractive fish to eat, given that so many other tasty fish have high mercury content. Some chefs complain that it lacks a strong taste.

Alone, it can taste a little bland. Personally, I love the fish--preferably grilled whole, Mediterranean style. The fish has a nice meaty consistency, not unlike grouper.

But, unless you are looking for illness, grouper has way too much mercury to eat. Tilapia comes from the ocean. By way of the less-wealthy hispanics for whom this was a common item when they cooked fish. Over the past couple of decades, its commonality in spanic cooking has made it move onto Mexican resatuarant menus, and then onto more upscale menus as other chefs figured out that this very bland fish could have anything done to it and it'd seem like a good thing.

Once it's in Sam's Club, consider that shark to be jumped. Overfishing and depletion of the population is next.
