Why do Kraft and other companies make processed cheese products - are they cheaper to make than natural cheese?

I mean, from the answers I got to a few other questions I asked recently, these products aren't exactly good for you! They're chock full of sodium and all kinds of additives. So why make them?

How did these unnatural things get their start? I assume that it must make economical sense to the manufacturers... I don't even know why people eat this stuff! I guess maybe people like them for nostalgic reasons, remembering eating them as kids.

Companies want more money, so they want things that are produced quickly, taste good, and last a long time - and they have to cost little to make. Fake cheese is just one thing along these lines... there's miracle whip, or whipped topping (whipped non-cream), tons of stuff is fake.Is it good for us? No, but since when have greedy corporations ever given a damn about our health.
