Why Does Quebec Want to Be Independent From the Rest of Canada?

They concider themselves unique and want to control their own lives. Personally I think separation would be bad for everyone. If they separate though all help that is standard should be removed.

Currency, healthcare, military support etc.

If the government had "always given in" then, Quebec would have been its own country.

The Nordique moving to Colorado: Federalism's fault. Front cover of MacLean's: Federalism fault. Plus you stole the whole idea of Poutine away from Quebeckers.

Now they sell it everywhere.

I'm still trying to figure everything out myself. Initially, it has to do with a line in the "Dominian Act" of 1867 that states that Canada was founded as two nations. New France (Quebec) and British North America (The rest of the country).

After the failure of the Meech Lake accord, The Bloc Quebecois started up (A Right-Wing Seperatist party) mostly from former members of the Progressive Conservative party. The largest argument for seperation, historically, is that seperatists believe that the province of Quebec should have exactly equal weight in the decision making process as all of the other provinces combined. In other words, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the territories would combine for 1 vote, and Quebec would get 1 vote, based on the "two nations" concept of the Dominion act.

Of course, that's just a small history lesson. Expo '67 also had some seperatist sparks too. But things are always changing.

I may be wrong entirely now about the current motivations for seperation.

Because at the root of Quebec wanting to be independent its its language. In fact, each nation should have an official language -- and only ONE official language. To do anything else is to hamstring effective governance, and further to lay the foundation for eventual civil war.

Bravo mr. happy. I like that. I think maybe the socialist form of government canada has may be distasteful to the people of quebec.

Just maybe they don't want the government up their collective butts each time they need a doctor, lawyer, auto, rest stop, ect... the more you let government make your choices, the more they want to make more of them. Sound familiar?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
