When people think of ADHD in children, they think of children bouncing around, out of control and just in constant motion. This is not always true. Some children with ADHD are hyperactive while others are more quiet and shy.

Signs and symptoms include inattentiveness, hyperactive and impulsive. Some kids might act out while others may just sit there and stare in space with their mind miles away. They may not be able to pay attention to details and make careless mistakes.

They may be easily distracted and have problems staying focused on something. They may also have trouble remembering things and following instructions. These are some of the symptoms of inattention in children.

Some symptoms of hyperactivity can be children always fidgeting and squirming. Some children will often leave their seat when they are supposed to be sitting quietly in a classroom. Hyperactivity is another symptom of ADHD in children.

Some children may blurt out an answer when they weren't even called on. They will also interrupt other people while they are talking. While some may think this is rude, it cannot be helped if they have ADHD and they will need to be treated for this.

When speaking about ADHD, it becomes important to note that the disorder is not only limited to children but can also affect adults. Many adults have been diagnosed with ADHD and a great number of these individuals have been struggling with the symptoms of this disorder since their childhood. Since ADHD is oftentimes written off as solely a childhood disorder, adults experiencing similar symptoms can be downright mystified as to what causes their negative experiences and their lack of self control.

Studies have found that the main culprit in ADHD is an imbalance of neurotransmitter activity within the brain, especially the area responsible for holding attention for certain amounts of time. Apart from exhibited inattention, individuals with ADHD also display increased levels of hyperactivity, oftentimes in socially unacceptable situations. However, it is a stereotype to conclude that all children or teens with the inability to sit still automatically have the disorder. At the same time, not all children/teens diagnosed with ADHD exhibit these symptoms equally.

Some may have the ability to sit still and appear attentive for a certain amount of time. Certain characteristics identified in many children/individuals with ADHD have included careless mistakes (that could have been prevented), easy distraction, procrastination, difficulty completing tasks on time, disorganization, forgetfulness, and rapid changes in conversation topics. The hyperactive children are typically found to be restless, squirming, fidgeting, running, climbing, jumping, or talking fast and excessively.

As for children, it becomes especially important for adults experiencing ADHD symptoms to seek help, since the inability to focus and remain attentive can quickly destroy different aspects of an individual’s life (including marriage, career, schooling, etc) if he/she and others around him/her are not aware of this condition.
