Am I the only one who was really bothered by the stealing of other peoples avatars today?

I don't blame MarshallO for being mad. It's a very unsettling thing to think someone can take your avatar and use your name to say anything they like here. Maybe it's a cute inside joke to some, but I think it's horrible. Some of us on here just come to have fun and meet friends.

This has made me very uneasy, and uncomfortable, and it also makes me sad, cause I enjoyed myself on here for a long time, and now I don't know if I will ever feel the same. We all have enough problems in our lives. I don't even know if the responses I will get to this will be genuine anymore. It sucks.

No, you were NOT the only one! I reported it as abuse, and sent a PM to Christian directly over it. If you haven't already, I suggest you do the same.

Whether or not it's against the rules, as far as I'm concerned, it's a form of identy theft. Whether or not the person doing it INTENDS it, it's bound to cause confusion and agravation, hurt feelings and other problems. And a person'd have to be pretty dumb NOT to realize that it was going to bug some of the folks he or she swiped avatars from AND folks who assume that the fake Avatar and name represented the person imitated--two innocent victims in the scenario.

Human beings are VISUALLY oriented people. Whether they know it or not, most folks don't read letter-by-letter, they glance at the SHAPE of the letters of what they recognize as a known quantity, and if the name is complicated (Yours is simple, Kar, and I DO see the letters on it--but I wouldn't see the difference between MarshallO and Marshall0, say, unless I was looking for it. Why would I?

It's bad enough, trying to keep track of who's who when people change their avatars frequently. But swiping someone else's makes it an even BIGGER pain in the butt to track. We all address people we know, people we have certain contacts with, out of SHARED EXPERIENCE.

Taking over someone's identifying features here means that the intruding person can hijack and abuse that shared experience. What are we supposed to do, to be sure that the name and avatar are who they say they are? Check every profile page?

I DON"T HAVE THE TIME for that--I'm on a 10+ year old computer, running windows 98, and I have maybe 1 to 1.5 hours a day here. I don't care to spend my Askville time making sure I'm talking to who I think I'm talking to. I know I'm not alone in this--and I certainly hope that the Askville Team closes this possiblity of further abuse.

WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO BE SURE we know who we're talking to! I just hope the Team does something for this one..

1 Also, the changing of one or two digits in a person's name is often overlooked, as it was with me. We are familiar with our friends avatars, and don't always look that closely at the name if there is only one digit changed.

3 I didn't know that happen either. I think it's an awfull trick. If you want to use someone avatar for a joke you should at least ask their permission.

" "Sorry to have bothered you. " "Here's my humor for today? Do you have any funny jokes to add?

" "What's with the Avatars? " "I always see these cute little avatars by peoples names. How do I get one without and upload?

Is there a site I can use? " "Where have all the avatars gone?" "Avatars? " "Where do you get your great avatars?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
