I contribute regularly to legitimate Animal rescue organizations. They also can't have high overhead meaning the person at the top is making millions, so I try to make sure it's a very good non profit organization. I am trying to find out why we hear so little about ASPCA as apposed to the SPCA.

ASPCA is the national level, SPCA usually refers to local branch... I’m talking off the top of my head here, but if memory serves me correctly, the ASPCA, or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is a national organization. It’s a non-profit organization and tho’ I can’t recall the exact date, has been around since the mid-1800’s. Maybe post-Civil War?
It seems to have become far more active of late in its lobbying efforts for various "companion animals," which I believe it the popular term now, laws. Not sure I agree with all it does, but I give it credit for calling attention to an issue that was largely ignored in its day. PETA seems to get much of the attention now, for better or worse, but the ASPCA has been around a long, long time.
The SPCA is usually used to refer to local organizations that follow the same principles, tho’ they’re not necessarily connected. Funding is not shared, in other words. Many local shelters use the SPCA moniker, both private and publicly funded ones.As to why you hear more of the SPCA than the ASPCA, I wonder if that’s true nationally.
I rarely see the term SPCA applied here in Alaska and only rarely in the area of FL that I once lived in. Might be a backlash against some increasing distaste for what some view as inter-connections with PETA’s seemingly more extremist views, but more likely just a choice of terminology. Personally, my money goes to my local shelters and rescue organizations.
We have a wonderful organization here in my area that has gone to great extremes to rescue pets whose time is up at the "official" shelters. They’ll bail them out and if the founder of the organization doesn’t have room, she pays for kennel board for the animal until it is placed. She largely uses her own money, tho’ donations are, of course, gratefully accepted.
I’ve seen this organization in action, ranging from Adopt a Pet days where animals needing new forever homes are showcased and potential owners are run thru and extensive type of interview and must provide references, to local ’share info’ type presentations and such. These are the sort of groups I support, not something on the national level. I can see where my money is going locally, even have a part of it by lending a hand and maybe even scooping a kennel run occasionally, while I’m never sure if my dollars are going toward animal care of fancy office furniture in the case of some organizations.

No, they are separate This is a quote that relates to the common confusion from the Wikipedia link for ASPCA:"Many local organizations use the term SPCA, but they are not related to the ASPCA, which is based in New York and has a national reach. Local organizations take in animals that are stray, abused, or owner give ups. They may be private, or contracted with their local government."And thanks for doing that, wish there were more like you :-) .
ASPCA has been around a very long time and is a national organization whereas SPCA operate locally under much of the same principles and that's where the similarities end. ASPCA over the years has evolved into a major lobbying machine. Don't let ASPCA's commercials fool you; very little of the money their receive through donations actually go to help the abused and neglected animals that appear in their commercials.
I believe that several states are moving towards taking some legal action against ASPCA for fraud. As a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization, ASPCA is not allowed to be involved in or pay for any lobbying services; they have for been involved in this practice for several years. I recently found out that out of every $1000 dollars collected by ASPCA, only $11 goes to help local animal shelters.
That's a poor track, your local shelter is probably not even getting a dime. If you want your contribution to really help abused, neglected or abandoned animals donate to your local SPCA. Do your home work on your local organization, most are doing good work, but if people would research some of the non-profits they contribute to organizations like ASPCA would not celebrities endorsing them or people donating to them.
Thanks, cprovie. I have never donated to ASPCA. Nor will I.
I donate locally and nationally to the SPCA. I also admire the work of the Good Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. So they also get donations.

THe difference is that one is America & the other is international. .com/" rel="nofollow">spca.com/ .org" rel="nofollow">aspca.org Also, I notice that the SPCA is a .com which means it is a commercial organization (for profit) .org USUALLY means not for profit .
OK, sure, maybe the ASPCA should get involved, but you have to admit it's funny. I wonder if you can get a cat to do it" "Are there any global organizations or scientific groups that side with conservatives on social issues? On any issues?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
