And if you introduce enough moisture into the air to bring the entire house up to a desired moisture content, then the area near the humidifier may be unacceptably moist.

You may then have mold problems in that area. I might suggest several smaller humidifiers, scattered in appropriate areas of the house. Keep one in your bedroom, since you will be there all night.

If your house has an open floor plan, then you may be alright with a fairly large unit that is centrally located. A ceiling fan kept running constantly will help to keep the humidity well distributed.
