Are you trapped into exchanging a Christmas gift every year to a friend that you rarely see but neither of you know how?

Oh my gosh, Lulu....YES! A good friend of mine moved to another state several years ago. We have always exchanged Christmas presents and birthday presents.

Since she’s moved we barely talk anymore. We still have those wonderful, close feelings when we DO talk, yet obviously the relationship is just not the same. As a seeker of truth, it just hurts my heart to send a gift purely out of obligation.

I just don’t feel right about giving a gift in that spirit, you know? Yet I have been thinking these past few days about how I will tell her that I’d like to end our tradition. What I decided I’d say is, "So and so, with life being as busy as it is I hope you’ll understand, and I bet you’ll agree, that this year it will suffice if we just send each other love and best wishes instead of presents for Christmas.

Are you okay with that? " I have no doubt that she will say yes, she’s okay with it. And then birthday presents can remain a special occasion gift, one I give with a full heart and much gladness.

Life is too short to give gifts sheerly out of obligation, but I so hear you that it is a sticky situation. LOL! (so tactful!) Sources: my life .

Gifts should come from the heart not obligation.

1 Give something really cheap and lame this year. I bet you won't get anything next year ;) This user has been banned from Askville.

2 Lulu, I had that conversation with my friend! She said it was absolutely fine that we not exchange gifts this year, that maybe we can have a "Christmas chat" and catch up. Horray!

" "What gift will you be returning or exchanging tomorrow?" "I feel I'm being trapped by a friend. What to do? " "What is the cheapest--but best--gift you've received for Christmas (or other holidays)?" "I need a Christmas gift for my 20 year old brother" "christmas gift for a 10 year old girl" "What's the most you spent on a Christmas gift this year?

" "What do you want most for Christmas/ the holidays? " "What's the one gift you want for Christmas this year?
