Can a 3 month old bottle fed baby be taught to breast feed?

It depends on the child and the mother I think this is one of those questions that can't be answered with a simple "yes" or "no" -- there are a lot of factors to consider. I really wanted to breastfeed my son, but he was born more than 13 weeks prematurely and had a number of medical challenges. We did try breastfeeding during his 98-day hospital stay, but he had to be able to take a full bottle before he could be discharged.

Once he had the bottle, he would only scream and cry when I put him to my breast. The lactation coordinator was with me every time we attempted breastfeeding and, after a while, even she was at a loss for what to do. We tried to breastfeed for 6 months after he came home -- when he was very hungry, when he was sleepy, by giving him a little bottle first (so he wasn't screaming) and then following with the breast, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in different rooms, when he was wide awake .. .

You name it, I tried it. But, in the meantime, since he had to have his calories, if he wouldn't feed at the breast he HAD to have a bottle -- it was too important to his overall health and growth. I consulted with three different lactation specialists and was in touch with a couple of leaders for our local La Leche League -- but none of them could give me any information that changed the situation.

So, after 6 months of trying to breastfeed (and I was pumping the whole time, so he could have breastmilk), I just decided that I'd had enough. We both ended up in tears almost every time, out of sheer frustration and exhaustion. That said, I have other online friends from the Yahoo!

Pump Moms group, and a number of them have been able to breastfeed while they are home, and still have their caregiver bottle feed (breast milk) while they are working or out of the home. The methods that have worked for them are as different as they are, so I would suggest you try a number of things to see what works. Experiment with when and where you breastfeed, what time of day it is, how hungry your baby is and so on.

If you have a lactation consultant through your county health department, she might be a good resource -- or, consider contacting your local La Leche League and maybe you can get some information that way. Most hospitals also have a number of resources and consultants that work with this topic every day, so you might consider contacting them for more information. If it's very important to you that your child have breastmilk, but you aren't able to work out actual breastfeeding, I would suggest you consider pumping.

I felt like it was still a great way for my son to get my milk (immunities, vitamins .... all that good stuff!) but without the drama that breastfeeding caused in our household -- and my husband could participate with the feedings as well. It did take a time commitment, though, so I know that doesn't work for everyone's schedule. Let me know if you consider pumping at all, because I have TONS of info and resources to help that work.

I did it for 10 1/2 months before my supply dried up. If you want some info on pumps in general, I would suggest you begin with the Medela website. Whatever you decide, good luck.

If you breastfed after birth, it may be possible. Otherwise, probably not. Doing some reading, it seems as if it is possible to re-start breastfeeding if it was established early, but most resources emphasize starting soon after childbirth to avoid "nipple confusion".

I am not a medical professional, however. Talking to a child's pediatrician would be most informative. Other people to contact would include a local branch of la leche league or a hospital lactation expert for more advice applicable to the situation.

That is a good question I would like to say yes. But the truth is that it would be very hard to do. You see getting milk form a bottle is very easy and getting milk from the breast is very hard.

Once you have lived the easy life very few peolpe babies included want to go back to the hard way of doing things. I do have a suggestion however, express you milk and put it into the bottle. That way you baby will still get all of the benefits of breastmilk without the difficulties of trying to switch them over..
