Can anyone tell me how this answer received the rating that it did on appeal?

askville.amazon.com/read-Sexuality/Answe... I were rating it, I would have given it at least a four, maybe a five. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it since the point that I got for asking the question will restore me to where I was before. Still, it does seem funny to me that I received a negative rating on an obviously good answer.

Good police work there, Lou. Yeah, I'd have given it a four, at least, because you were thorough enough to find the article. The problem you ran into was that the whole topic was the tie in between alcohol and sex--especially male choices for alcohol and sex, and how that removes power from the male (which frightens at least half of those voting.) Me?

I know alcohol makes idiots of whoever chooses it; that's why I'd confine my drinking to my home, where I would be safe from my idiocy. Most don't, and your bit of information told them they were being idiots with that choice."And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country" (Luke 4:24).

It would have gotten a two from me. Here is why: *It is a stupid nonsensical question asked by a non-interested party (which makes it different from a stupid nonsensical question asked by a legitimate AV member), hence it is litter. By answering it "seriously" you contribute to the litter problem at Askville.

That nets it a three. *There are two typos in the first sentence, which tells me the answerer didn’t proof his/her work carefully. Not worth dinging a star, but worth more careful scrutiny of the answer.

Still at this point a three. *Reference to a lame sexist joke...now teetering toward a two. Still nothing nudging me toward a four.

*Copied and pasted an article in its entirety, which is both copyright infringement and violation of Askville TOS. No, they do not enforce this, but that is their shame, and doesn’t make it legal or ethically okay. This drops the rating to a one for me.

And I know, we all do it, yada yada yada. But be glad you got a THREE for someone else’s work! That is generous.

*You credited the source you stole your material from, and your link works. This bumps it back up to a two, because you at least attempted to be an "honest" thief, and your hyperlink works. Had I been able to rate Joyce McFadden, the author of the work, I would have given her a better score.

But that was not an option. So a two on this appeal if it were to have come to me (which it didn’t; I barely get any BQ appeals, but when I do I give them anywhere from 1 to 5 stars. I do not rate them down solely because they are bone-ass question appeals).

Goldie .

I would have probably rated it a 3, Rufus I think it didn’t really answer the question, basically. It’s kind of a chance you take when answering a question that doesn’t really make sense in the first place; your interpretation of what they are asking might be totally different than someone else’s interpretation. I always ask myself why the person chose this question to answer when there are millions others out there that make much more sense.

Why waste time on a crappy question? The question asked for where they "could read more about sexuality in a can", which I would take as looking for other sources regarding that topic. Instead, you presented them with a long and kind of boring story that was copied and pasted in it’s entirety (which many Askvillers deeply frown upon).

I think your first sentence started out on the right track; but then you swerved by including the whole long article from Huffington Post (which as you yourself have stated in the past isn’t known to be an unbiased source, so perhaps the rater took that into consideration). Where was other info about drinking and sexuality? That’s what I would have expected.

They weren’t asking for the Huffington Post article, they were looking for sources of more info. One is not "more". And if you said the whole premise of the question was from Huffington Post, then they already had that one and wanted something MORE, not the info that they already had.

I know you love the sexual questions, but perhaps this answer was sent to appeal to someone who didn’t appreciate reading this kind of ribald humor as an answer in Askville--you need to know your audience when presenting this kind of thing, and your success with it in the past hasn’t been that great. Then of course, there’s those who automatically rate BQs down just because they hate them. Maybe that’s what happened, maybe not.

We’ll never know unless whoever rated it explains their rationale. One thing for sure--we know that they didn’t rate it down because they knew it was you! The red curtain made sure of that!

So we can at least know it wasn’t personal, right? It’s water under the bridge now. The points are a scratch, and now you’ve got a few more for rating these answers.

I would suggest you go for questions that are more clearly written to avoid these kinds of situations in the future, and to use your own writing skills rather than copying and pasting complete articles. We all know how to follow a link if we need to read more. Poppet .

It looks like it should have been rated as a five star answer to me. I have no idea why the answer wasn't rated as a five star answer. I can't believe nothing changed on the appeal. It's a shame you can't appeal it twice.

The only thing I can imagine is the person who rated the appeal may not have taken the proper time to read how thoroughly you answered the question. I would be just as perplexed as you are over this outcome. It's a very strange situation.

Today, my four year old wanted to join in at Askville. He pressed "appeal this answer" to my closed answer!

When asked to appeal a rating - what do you do when you are asked to appeal a rating, and you don't think the answer....

If you get an appeal for someone who (it appears) received an unfair low rating, do you give an higher rating ...

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
