Can I use tivo with comcast cable?

Can I use tivo with comcast cable I currently have Comcast's issued DVR and it stinks! I heard a rumor that Comcast signed with TIVO and they are going to issue TIVO dvrs soon in the same way that DirecTV did. Does anyone know when?

You have several options You have several options to use TiVo with Comcast. Comcast is indeed working with TiVo to bring TiVo software to their DVRs. But, depending on where you live, you may have quite a wait.

They have just started early deployments in the Boston area. This is the first Comcast territory to get the software, and it isn’t even widely available there yet. The broad launch in Boston is supposed to happen ’soon’ - see TiVo’s comments in their recent quarterly call.It will launch in Boston and some of the surrounding New England area.

After that launch Comcast plans to expanding to other areas, but they have not announced which area(s) will get it next, or when that may be. But it is clear it won’t be until something later in 2008. And they plan to do a phased deployment, one area at a time.

Also, currently the software is only running on Motorola set top boxes. If you live in an area where Comcast uses Scientific Atlanta units, then the wait will be longer. Just a couple of months ago Comcast agreed to fund TiVo’s work to port the software to SciAtl units, but that’s just getting underway.

If and when the software is available in your area, it is an additional $2.95/month on top of Comcast’s existing DVR fees. Alternatively, you can use a standalone TiVo with Comcast’s cable service. The TiVo Series2DT can tune two analog cable channels natively (generally channels 1-99), as well as using an external cable box to tune any digital channels.

So it can record two analog channels or one analog and one digital channel at a time. The S2DT is cable and satellite only - no antenna support, and it is SD only - no HD. The TiVo Series3 and TiVo HD natively support analog and digital cable, via CableCARD, and have dual tuners.

So they both can record two channels, analog or digital. Both units support antenna and/or cable, but do not work with satellite, and both also record HD content. The Series3 or TiVo HD are probably the best units to consider, as they have fully analog and digital, SD and HD support.

All three of these units have built-in wired Ethernet ports, or you can connect them to a WiFi network with TiVo's 802.11g USB network adapter. HD TiVo works just fine. Comcast's TiVo being set back by hardware problems. The long-rumored TiVo-on-Comcast-box deal is true, but the results of early testing in the Boston area have been poor.

The software was written for the new generation of Motorola boxes, but the box has a serious design flaw when it comes to reading remote control signals among other critical-to-DVR functions... it's just not ready yet and that's why they've never announced a release date. If you want something that works right now, you want the TiVO HD, or the higher-end Series 3 TiVo. You'll need a pair of CableCards to get full functionality out of it, and you might need to ask a few times before you get somebody who knows what they're talking about, but you should be charged a reasonable fee for the cards.

A normal tivo will work just fine You don't need to wait for any such comcast-specific tivo. A normal tivo will work with your existing comcast cable system just fine. The tivo I bought for my parents last Christmas suits their needs (they have Comcast) with no issues.It's really only sattelite (Dish, DirectTV) that has any sorts of issues.

Cable systems all work perfectly well with TiVo. I personally have TimeWarner Cable. If your cable package includes HDTV, make sure you purchase a HDTiVo, or you'll lose the HD benefit.

If your cable package includes Digital Cable, make sure when you take your DVR back to Comcast, you ask them for just a normal cable box, as you'll still need a Comcast cable box to receive the digital channels (or you could get a cablecard, and use a Series 3 TiVo, but you lose features like PPV if you go that route). Yes, you can use Tive with Comcast, at least here in Houston. We have had no problems with our Tivo. I was leery of getting the cable company's DVR and now I am glad I did not.

I have heard the same rumors you have heard about Tivo teaming with Comcast. It has been about 2 years since they agreed to do it. I found the article below that says the Tivo software has been loaded onto Comcast boxes and shipped to customers in New England starting last month.No word on when it will expand to other states.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
