Canon EOS 30D Vs. EOS 5D?

These are difficult questions and depend a great deal on how you intend to use the camera and how much you can afford to spend on a camera. Canon EOS 30D or EOS 20D? The EOS 20D is a very good camera indeed.

I've been using one for well over a year and I've been very happy with it. The 30D does offer a few nice additions though. The larger LCD screen which, from my experience with the EOS 5D, is significantly easier to read (especially if your close vision isn't all that it once was!).

The firmware improvement such as Picture Styles, and RGB histogram, tweaked AF etc. Are also a definite plus. Right now the 20D is selling for maybe $1150 and it could drop to $1100. The 30D is expected to sell at $1400.

If I didn't already have an EOS 20D, I'd certainly pay the extra $300 for the new Canon EOS 30D. Whether it's worth the $500-$600 it would cost to sell the 20D and buy a 30D is a different question. For some it will be, for some it won't.

The image won't be any better, though the EOS 30D will be a nicer camera to use. For those upgrading from a 6MP DSLR like the EOS 10D or original Digital Rebel, While the EOS 30D is more attractive, with the EOS 20D selling for around $300 less it's still quite a viable proposition. If money is tight and image quality is your major reason for upgrading, the 20D might just be an excellent camera for you while it's still available.

It depends. I’d give a slight advantage to the 5D in terms of image quality, larger sensor, but about the same pixel density. The difference in the 30D and the 5D is more about the size of the sensor contained within the camera body.

The 5D contains a full-frame sensor, approximately the same size as the 35mm film format. The 30D uses a 1.6x cropped sensor, which is smaller. The APS-C sized sensor that the 30D uses is much cheaper to manufacture than a full-frame sensor -- about 20 times as cheap, but is used in most Digital SLR bodies.

The full-frame sensor makes the 5D something of an film-enthusiast turned digital specialty item -- those who were trained on 35mm film are used to it. The EOS 30D is more amateur friendly, with their controls rigged with many more presets, but the 30D is also a faster camera (30D with 5fps vs. the 5D’s 3fps). What happens on a 1.6x crop sensor lens is that camera lenses are lengthened.

For example, if you took the 50mm lens and placed it on a 1.6x crop factor body, you’d get the equivalent length of 80mm. The controls and the build of the 30D and EOS 5D are both very similar to each other. They both offer very professional-style controls, with the jog dial on the back, which is taken from the Professional 1D/1Ds series cameras.

I went to a 5D after owning a 20D (predecessor to 30D) for many years. The reason I went up to a 5D was that I already owned two wide-angle lenses, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L USM IS, and the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM. Hard to say I went to a camera store with my Canon EOS 20D (similar to 30D) and tried to take the same photo with it and the 5D, with the same lens. When I brought the images home & looked on my monitor, I had a really hard time telling the difference (other than magnification due to the sensor size difference). However, you might look into the Digital Rebel with the self-cleaning sensor.

I've had problems keeping the sensor clean on my 20D. Your best bet is to replicate my experiment at your local camera store.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
