The sideview mirror in an old Mitsubishi I used to drive got cracked, and the mechanics told me the same thing. The only way to properly fix it is to replace the entire casing, and it's expensive. But if you go to any auto parts store, you can usually find a replacement that will fit in the casing.
Then you just need some Super Glue and you can attach right to the inner workings. The problem is that you won't be able to adjust it, and it's probably not legal (though no one will ever be able to tell).
