I have no idea why someone would recommend getting a smaller tank but anyways I would go with a nice big java fern in the middle of the tank as the centerpiece then some ludwigia repens scattered about the back and a java moss carpet along the bottom with a big piece of driftwood going from the back right, leading to the front left but stops 2/3 of the way of the length of the tank. They can all tolerate low light and would be fine with the betta. Good Luck!
Paul, you're clearly not a betta expert. Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons. Now, if I were you, I would move the tank away from the window, to help avoid any possible algae problems.
Either that, or buy a couple of snails to put in there too, make sure they're the kind that DOES NOT breed, or you'll be in some trouble.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
