Sales tax is dependant on a number of factors. The Amazon.com help pages are a great resource. The taxes charged are based on a number of different factors.

It depends on where the item is shipping to and who is shipping it. Third party sellers will calculate the taxes into the cost of the item most of the time. Think of online as like a store.

If you come from a tax exempt state, you don’t pay sales tax. If you come from a state that charges tax, then that tax is calculated based on your states sales tax amount. If you do come from a tax exempt state, all you have to do is call Amazon.com Customer Service (from the help pages!

) and they will refund the taxes for you. It’s really simple! If the order is shipping from a third party seller, then you may want to contact that seller about their salex tax policy.

All of this is explained much better on the help pages on Amazon.com. Take a look. Sources: amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html... .

Taxes are supposed to be collected from a person who lives in a state where a retailer has a business. Meaning ... if you are in California and order from Sears ... they will collect taxes because they have stores in California and thehy have to send taxxes to the state on all sales in California. Unless they've changed the laws, Amazon shouldn't have to collect taxes because they don't have a store anywhere.

Although they may be required to collect in stores in which they have a warehouse or shipping site. I'll be interested to see what an accountant or tax expert might have to say about this. Cheers!

No, Amazon doesn't charge any taxes... no private company can charge a tax on anything. Only governments- federal, state and local- can. Sales tax is only state or localized.

What companies do is pass taxes along to the consumer when they are charged. The taxing of online purchases is still an up-in-the-air thing. At this point, if you live in the state that is selling you that item, you MAY be charged a tax.

There is a possibility that the federal government will start assessing sales tax on online purchases, I think to dole out to the state involved, but that is meeting with lots of resistance. Sources: opinion .
